I never gave much thought to lasers until recently. I got a "close to 50mW, honest" greenie off Amazon for about 25 bucks on a whim last week and have been impressed. On impulse I ordered a Hercules 400 yesterday.... should I be getting my hopes up to be amazed? Anyway I 'm glad I found this forum - the discount paid for the optional expander.

^Trust me, you won't be disapponted. I had a Herc for about two months before I sold it to get a high-powered lab-style laser for a scanner. I loved the thing. They are insanely bright and very high quality.

ive gotten the "true 30mw" off amazon. looks pretty identical in brightness to the 5mw $6 ebay green. pretty sure anything will be brighter than the amazon junk

I ordered two pair of goggles - at some point I'll need to let the wife know about this new hobby.

I hope you also bought some Laser Safety Goggles...
or you might see the laser beam only once per eye...

[EDIT]... sorry... really slow post

Oh Chuck, YES, yes you will be amazed!

Think of it like going from having 56k to DSL.

(Yes you can think about porn too... mostly).

Trust me - You'll LOVE the Herc (although it can be a little bulky for "portable" use) - Watch out for "collateral damage", seriously, while I've messed with mine I have seared holes in many dark objects in and around my home (you can light matches across the ROOM with one of the big Herc's)...

Welcome to the hardcore side of the hobby - just be sure you're ready for it!

Let me tell you something, your "close to 50mW laser" will be NOTHING compared to your new Hercules.
And remember one thing: Safety first! One small reflection to the eye could cause eye damage. I know you bought some goggles, but make sure you use them!

I intend to give this device at least the respect and care I take with my firearms. There is a whole bunch of stuff I've yet to see; no goggles = Herc still in case.

LaserGlow will not dissapoint. I had one of their Aries75 and it was incredible, i can only imagine what one of their top end Hercs can do.

I ordered OD +7 googles - I didn't know if I would see the beam at all but wanted high protection against Murphy's Law. You guys are making great points!

Safety Third now did I say that

Welcome to the forum and remember wear your safety goggles !

Have a Great Day ! Pyro... :eg:

YES you will be very impressed.

It is a bit sad though that one can purchase a used laserscope KTP for the price of a Herc 400 and have 40W of q-switched green (and probably around 10W CW) rather than 400mW.

Thanks for all the assurances of the additional power headed my way. It makes me wonder how my " take our amazon word for it 49.99 (maybe) " < 50mW pointer and the Herc 400 both are considered to be in the same class and if any of the Herc 400s ever inadvertantly nudge into the bottom threshold of the class IV at peak? Not that I would mind (actually would be tickled pink) just curious.
