Why gas lasers?

^^^^^^^^ tru dat Chris!! your LUMIA is already legendary!!

Mariomaster- can you please re-post that pic as it just WAY too SMALL(j/k-sarcasm)

as far as going to the best place to find a good deal?? you are already there(here).

try to find a member seller near enough to avoid shipping- 5hit happens during shipping and its much better to see a gasser(not gassies PLEASE) in person BEFORE buying..and cheaper too.

gas lasers are 'old school' and therefore have a draw of their own- they use no batteries and normally have no need for a rest cycle AND anyone can buy a diode laser anywhere- gas lasers take time to find and that can have their own rewards-- MLs offer wavelengths that will never be offered in a diode laser- many here owned a violet laser long before we ever heard of ' blu-ray' --

We have a special sticky thread just for good finds-(in the 'deals and discounts' section) some post there for advice some just to share the find with all including a few that may want to bid or buy so make it clear which you are when posting there- MOST here will respect you and NOT bid against you. But some don't think this way and I feel sorry for them..

but make your intentions VERY clear in your post.. in some cases other have already seen the 'find' and may be bidding-- in that case I would hope you would just wish them good luck and look for another not 'taken' -if you stop bidding for any reason please come back and post that too- as there may be member that would want to bid. We also like to hear back if you get the item or not AND what you got- did it lase?- how much output did it make etc.
for expert advice on-line go see Sam(if you dont know Sam then you dont know jack(5hit) about gas lasers)- our forum gurus are(in no order & off the top of my head) daguin- mariomaster- cypara-phil-Hemlock Mike- bionic badger-and many many more..
At Sam's Laser FAQ you can read all the specs on practically every gas laser ever made..tons of info from MANY sources and most here look up to Dr Sam. (insert 'not-worthy' smilie here)

CORRECTION EDIT- Dr Sam did not write the 'laser bible' there is much at FAQ that came from many other sources-- i meant no slight to any others--

As mentioned before SS lasers are replacing gas in devices like confocule microscopes- DNA sequencers- High speed copiers et al- AND sometimes the entire device is scrapped or put into storage forever- find the person in charge of these and you may get lucky and possible even get the item free.
it will likely be very large and heavy- so helpers and a truck or trailer would be needed- I have seen perfectly good working Argons be gotten for next to nothing --complete with remote controllers- air cooling fan/ductwork and Power Supply-

hope this post has been helpful -if so, rather than thank me, simply send LPF a donation.. even small ones help keep the lights on at LPF.

Sam wrote the "gas laser bible" eh? What about us 50 or so contributors who gave Sam access to the technology and wrote large parts which Sam Edited?

EDITED.

Only later in the history of the FAQ did he start writing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in talking to both of them and in reading. Steve is all about Argons, Krpytons, Mixed Gas, etc. Sam is all about HeNe lasers.

Obviously they both are very knowledgeable on either but that is where their focus and wealth of knowledge is.

Sam has the patience and fortitude to maintain the Laser FAQ.

Whenever I hear Gas Lasers I see wavelength's that are not possible/very hard to make in DPSS or direct diode form. But thay may just be me.

~20-30 years ago yes. Today you can easily generate different colours using interactions of light with itself (nonlinear optics).

Nichia already sells many of those exotic colours in diode form.
