Why gas lasers?

Indeed. HeNes range from a few inches to a few feet... :D

And if you want to get one it's not to hard or expensive, just takes some time to find a good tube. Old ones often don't last due to leaks.

Plus gas is awesome! Like, duh!

Pictures like this generally convince people to buy their first gas :p

Not to mention the beam specs and stability are top notch

That's not completely accurate.

I have a greene that goes from 2mW, to 0 after warmup, and I know of another that does the same. Also, divergence can be VERY high on some tubes. I have tube that puts a 1" spot on the wall from about 18-20' :( Plus there are still multimode tubes, I have one, and I know specifically of another.

As far as beam specs, it's still something to look at when purchasing gas. There is no real standard ;)

If there's a thicker bore, you will have more divergence, and more modes, to even mode hopping.

Just the way of the road :)

True. But most generally they are superior to diodes in this respect. I do know what you mean though. We have an ir hene that has horrible divergence too

Yup, most first time Red HeNe tubes are going to have a much better beam than most diodes.

I don't have bad divergence on one single one of my HeNe or Argons. Now some of my diodes are terribble even with the best correction.

I really should save for a ion laser :P , My only gas was a 60W co2 laser that played PWM Mario theme song .

Depends on the type and brand, as well as the condition. If it's in good shape and low hours with a good strong multi-line... 500-1200. A tunable possibly more...

Dave has a very nice one for sale, and had I not been looking for a 60X or 532, I would have already bought.

I also don't need two of the same PSU :p

My tunable was $400.

There's a 60X 6 line on PL with 3 digit hours for $500.

You're way overpricing these :p

You have to realize that the sellers on eBay don't reflect the price that we really pay. I would never pay 4 digits for an ion unless it was a large frame doing multiple watts. Even then, I doubt it.

Dave's selling a 120mW ML for $430 or something like that. Ctrl+F "Daguin" in the BST section.
