why dogs chase laser beams

Mine is German Shephard, which are known for loyalty to people.

I guess some of my laziness rubbed off on him.

The only time he's going to bother getting up is when it's time to bark at the mailman. It's like a morning routine.

Personally, prefer coffee. I'm surprised he's not used to drinking that, as he is to eating everything we do

I suppose the reaction to a laser dot will vary wildy between breeds of dogs of all sizes though. Perhaps its hunting instinct.

I think the article means dogs can 'go nuts' while chasing the laser, not that they will remain nuts after you stop messing around it with though.

My dog never chases after the dot from a laser. He doesnt even look at it. It appears as if he doesnt even know it is there, most of the time. Sometimes he just looks at it for a second, then goes back to whatever else he was doing. I guess my dog is not at all curious about lasers

In my experience its rare for a dog to chase a laser spot, cats? all the time!
Eudaimonium, I was attacked by a german shephard and I was seven years old, I was at my cousins farm and it was the dog from the farm across the street,, I was throwing small stones/pebbles at it and it mauled me.. 140+ stitches, bloody mess I was, I have no fear of dogs from this.

Once I had this little kid climbing up the curtains to get at the little spot from a portable HeNe, he was up on 3rd floor

When i would point the red dot from the laser on the ground my dog would chase or even bark at the dot.

I've had 2 dogs that would chase, 1 dog that would not.

He knew where the beam came from. He worked that out about 1 minute after I got out the HENE. Border Collies for the most part, are not dumb.

Cats have a instinct that if they are not obtaining about two out of every three kills, they need to practice.

So pointers trip the instinct in many cats, and they will have stress themselves to the point of a heart attack trying.

Dogs will quit the laser and give up. Cats, usually will not.

When my wife and I went to the rescue shelter to pick out a pup I took a low power green with me. After about an hour of meet-n-greet with the 7 pups I put the dot on the far wall of the room. Two of the pups noticed the dot, and one went over to check it out. That's the one we went home with. I had wanted to get the smartest of the bunch and I figured curiosity was a decent proxy for intelligence.

Sarcastic towards what?
That it did not induce a lifelong fear?

I was young, a stranger to the dog and alongside my cousin of the same age who was also throwing & not a stranger.

I guess my point was is that German Shepherds are not all peaceful dogs and some can be quite violent.

German Shephards are incredibly loyal and peaceful.

Definition of "peaceful" is not "will not fight back when threatened".

If you were throwing stones at a person, would you expect a different outcome?
Honestly, what outcome did you expect? If you were just a kid back then and did not actually think the action through, don't defent your actions NOW when you're more intelligent than you were back then. THINK, man!

The dog is intelligent enough to realise that he is threatened in some way, and to figure out that it's your doing.

Just like mine knows exactly that laser is my toy and I'm doing it on purpose - when I shut the laser off, he walks up to me and sometimes will yank my hand if he wants me to turn the laser on again.

Don't underestimate the intelligence of beings a lot of people trust their lives and personal property to.

Has anyone else tried to experiment with which color laser the dogs seem to respond to more?

I use the 5mw kind whenever I play laser with the dogs. I've noticed my dogs didn't respond very well to the violet one. My dog got really excited about the green and blue ones but I think the green ones were a bit too bright so I stopped using that one with her.

I read somewhere that dogs are color blind in the sense that they have trouble differentiating between red and green...I've always wondered if that means they see everything as some sort of red/green color that humans can't perceive or just a color in between like yellow.

My dogs go apeshit for 638nm. 405nm is kinda meh for them and 445-532 is interesting but not as much as red.
