why dogs chase laser beams

Just to clarify, I judged my dogs interest in 445 by shining the beam at night, NOT the dot. I would see how much they tried to bite the beam whilst keeping it out of their reach.

My dogs go apeshit for 638nm. 405nm is kinda meh for them and 445-532 is interesting but not as much as red.

that's interesting, as normal dogs dont see Red that much,
the see Blue way better then Red and Green.
Just like humans have a optimation for green, dogs have one for Blue.

Perhaps tossing a kibble somewhere in the "play" area while the cat/dog is chasing/distracted by the dot, then leading them to the treat with the laser. Only trouble is, once you do this they will always expect to catch the "dot-treat" after that!

LOVE the LED "dot-toy" idea too!

In my experience its rare for a dog to chase a laser spot, cats? all the time!
Eudaimonium, I was attacked by a german shephard and I was seven years old, I was at my cousins farm and it was the dog from the farm across the street,, I was throwing small stones/pebbles at it and it mauled me.. 140+ stitches, bloody mess I was, I have no fear of dogs from this.

:) Once I had this little kid climbing up the curtains to get at the little spot from a portable HeNe, he was up on 3rd floor :)

LOL, you throw rocks at me ill maul you too...

Interesting game, but never to eyes direct illuminate. This will hurt your pet.

IIRC (and this is going WAY back), dogs "perceive" the color red as virtually black.
A "red" dot could look like a black "bug" running around ;)

My dog couldn't care less about laser dots (go figure)
My African cichlids however . . . .

Peace,
dave
