I am looking into buying a handgun soon and I am currently considering the following guns:

*Glock 22 .40 Cal
*Springfield Armory 1911 .45 ACP

Any suggestions? The glock is polymer frame and the 1911 is stainless steel. This will be my first handgun.

Thanks,
Isaac

I am fan of both. BUT i would choose the 1911 :) Just because i like the full metal and the history.

However if i were you i would go to the range or shop and hold both. Check which ones fits your hand best. Also note the weight of both guns. Which one is lighter, what is your personal preference etc. (costs of ammo per caliber)

If you get the chance try shooting both then make up your mind. Both are proven platforms so you can't really go wrong with either one of them.

greetings!

It also depends on if this is something you plan to carry / conceal. Out of the two you list I'd go with the glock if you plan to carry. It should be much lighter then the 1911 especially in a .45. I'm more a fan of Taurus myself. Much better priced and I own several in various calibers and configurations and haven't had any major issues with any of them.

Give us some more information on what you plan to do with it and then we can fine tune what may work best. If you have a gun range that rents guns, I highly suggest trying out the model you intend to buy just to be sure it's the right gun for you.

Got the roger sr9c and its great! 10 round mag for carry and 17 round turns it into a full size gun. Best overall value and 9mm rounds are a bit easier to find.

Go check out this guy's gun review videos. His older ones. Lots of his vids the past year are political and commentary but his earlier ones were very informative.

The Yankee Marshal - YouTube

Also over on You Tube is Hickok45. I think he's reviewed and shown almost every handgun made.

There are so many considerations with handguns. Your use of it being the primary one. I have many. If you plan to conceal carry there are some great new options with 45 cal compact pistols. So many. I like the Springfield Xds in 45. But several others.

The other thing is ... do you really need 45? Heavy. Not as many cartridges. 9mm has been proven to do 90% of what 45 can do and lots more chances to get the job done. 40 cal is in between. Then there's 357 sig. Lots of power in a small package and the necked down cartridge never hangs up in a semi.

The other consideration is ... semi or revolver. The Yankee Marshal guy linked above shows some very nice revolvers that are small enough to conceal carry with ease. Don't know how comfortable with hand guns you are but revolvers are essentially very much safer than semi autos. Also if you want your wife or girl friend to shoot ... women are almost always more comfortable with revolvers. Racking the slide is tough for all but the most experienced hand gun shooting women.

Hope this helps. :)

PS: Find a good range and rent a lot of guns before you decide. This will save you LOTS of money and disappointment.

I like the px4, smoothest 9mm I have shot. there are .40 and .45 cal versions too

Nice gun but I prefer pistols without external safeties. Your trigger finger is the primary safety. ( Can't remember but I think they only make them with external safeties. )

I don't like Glocks much any more cause I no longer care for polymer frames. But the glock trigger and striker safety is fool proof. I now only buy hand guns with hammers and double action/single action. I also like stainless steel. Just so much easier to maintain and if it gets scratched up you can refinish it.

I've become very partial to Sig Sauers. Many have decockers which are a joy to behold. Sig makes so many different wonderful hand guns you just can't own only one.:D

Your first carry should prolly be a revolver I would go with a .357 or a good .38 as you get comfortable at carrying buy a glock take it to the range and show it some love.

I have shot the G22 and was so impressed that I have changed my carry weapon to the G23 (the compact version of the same gun). I love it.

I like the Taurus 1911 45ACP better than the Glock 22 .40 Cal mainly on looks it hasn't the magazine capacity 8+ 1 vs 13 +1 of the glock and is a fair bit heavier but the polymer construction doesn't do it for me i want steel and the stainless on the Taurus to me is much nicer. You will pay more more the SS Taurus so obviously your budget comes into play, and with the extra weight that's obviously a consideration as well

I'm not a fan of Glocks after owning a 21. I like my M&P 40 a lot more.

As for the 1911, I'm sure it would be nice. I have a hard time shooting pistols that require the use of the webbing between your thumb and pointing finger to activate a safety mechanism though.

Agree, if he's going to carry I'd get the G23
