Right now I use the laptop for the projector I have. I'm going to build a mid tower out of some old parts I have. It will consist of a Intel Q6600, Intel DX38BT MB and 6GB of RAM. I haven't decided on a video card yet. I plan on mounting a 17" or 19" display to the side of the case. Non widescreen of course.

Man, you guys have rigged PC setups! (no pun intended)

I ditched my PC because it sucked 15 times more watts than my laptop.

I'm no gamer, so if word processing and internet works, I'm all set! :crackup:

Damn that is one crazy rig. I have 2 my editing is a bit similar to yours.
But it has a different gpu and motherboard

I've heard some negative things about Gigabyte boards, but that was a couple of years ago.

I'm just wondering how it compares to other motherboards, such as Asus.

Do you do video and photo editing?

I was thinking of getting the 3770k but i have around 3k saved. And im waiting on new parts to come out. And gonna do custom water cooling.

Whats your temperature benchmark for your cpu?

yeah, gigabyte wasnt so great, But now they improved.
But MSI, just started getting DOA motherboards.
Asrock is currently the best brand for Mobos, in my opinion because of the price and how nice it looks.
 
I actually switched from an ASUS (a P5B Deluxe) to the Gigabyte. I was kind of disappointed with the ASUS at the time, but I think it was really a matter of the chipset that it used that limited the amount of RAM, rather than the manufacturer. The board is being used in another computer, so it's still good. Gigabyte's board work fine, and come with nice stuff like locking SATA cables and the thick copper used in the PCB. I had some issues with one of the heatpipe coolers for the ASUS as well, but that was more an issue with the case. I do think Gigabyte's boards are better labeled and easier to setup, but I think most modern motherboard makers do a good job making things easy.

I was thinking one of those eVGA boards would be nice, especially those 2-socket versions, for a computation server. Lately, however, I don't think I'd really make enough use of the processors and RAM. I only upgraded my RAM recently from 12GB--which I still think it well enough--because of some large simulations I need to run, and the RAM was so damn cheap. I'd rather spend the money on monitors, SSDs, video cards or something like that (or laser stuff for non-computer things).

Temperature is 35c av, with a high of just slightly less than 38c under full load.
I'd stay CLEAR of water cooling as the good water coolers are customs. The majority of the commercial water coolers have VERY poor pumps.
You're far safer to go the Noctua cooler route. Yes, you need LP ram. Samsung makes the best 30nm DDR3 around, and stock runs 1.35V. Does Cas 9 at 1866Mhz or 4.8ns read/write.

Yes, I will be using the build for multi-media and design. It's been disassembled at present and going into a Cosmos II case. Still some additional tweaks to be made.

No bench just yet. Will do as soon as everything has been setup.
 
Fountain pumps work pretty well. I used one in an old rig way back in the day before all-in-one kits. I used a fountain pump (pretty darn good, as well as quiet), copper gas tubing, a solid copper block from Danger Dan (still in the drawer here), and a big copper radiator. Unfortunately, I was stupid and assumed I didn't need to cool the rest of the case, so it affected my caps on the motherboard among other things. The electrolytic caps (not those nice solid ones they use now) started leaking and bloating, but fortunately I had upgraded before that ever became an issue (a friend had one explode and kill everything).

It's amazing how much louder everything appears to sound when you have a very quiet system. I was obsessively trying to curb the sound my PSU was making because it was the loudest sound I could hear from the machine.
