What do you guys think of this?

Do you think that it is a good idea to back up your system online?

Never. Pay someone to steal or corrupt your software or data? Like Bugs Bunny sez, "Imagine! Asking for it!"

Folks whose files and data are their livelihood, and/or who might even bother with encryption techniques do not need to use such a service. We maintain our own backups, offsite or not. If by chance you have your livelihood on your PC and do not have the knowledge or tools, find a friend who does.

Other folks who would buy in to that (whether it's your Mom, or just a lazy user) are blindly trusting unknowns. Outside the slim possibility of a hardware failure, outside the chance of the company closing down, as these services increase in number, it's only a matter of time before one or more of these simply injects peoples' backups with viruses and malware, just waiting for the unsuspecting to restore it on their system or to load a new machine.

Those who came up with this idea are either (1) simply smart enough to have thought of another way to take money from the trusting ignorant, or (2) are just waiting for the chance, and looking for property that's more interesting than Grandma's photo album.
 
I didn't read all the posts, but here's my opinion:

Online datacenters can go down, or be hacked, or go out of business without warning. Plus, what if your internet connection is broken? Then you can't access your own files anyway.

I believe it's cheaper and easier and safer to just back up your system or files to a portable hard drive. It's a one-time cost, but you can keep it with you, or keep it safe, and just copy files to it directly.

Simple. Cheap. Secure. And you have all the control.

There's no such thing as 100% bulletproof encryption.

Anyways, we were talking about me sending a backup to someone that I don't know at all, to keep it safe, and him paying completely for it, and you completely missed the joke.

Anyways, anyone smart enough to use encryption would know that.

That's why you only keep a backup online!


PS: It is possible to make encryption that theoretically takes millenia to crack, but it's usually too slow for practical purposes.

If that's the case, then why have their been cases where classified information has been stolen from classified systems? Why don't credit card companies use these so called millenia to crack encryptions? If people's lives and finances aren't practical enough, then I don't know what is.
