Today I saw for the first time a 808nm Beam with my naked eye...

Well believe it or not, I was playing arround with my beams in a dark room full of fog. I decided to try out the 808 and see if I could actually see it.

Well I remained in total darkness for about 10 min. than I turned the 808 on and placed it in parallel to my eye to try to see the beam (actually I placed the laser on my foarhead right between my eyes) and guess what I saw it. It is a real faded very dark read beam, it is almost impossible to focus it but I could see it with the naked eyes.

I still consider the 808nm my most uslesess laser but at least I can say that I saw the invisible light....

Very nice, Very nice indeed. It must have been extremely high powered for you to have been able to see the beam? My guess is atleast a watt?

Not really its just a bit over 300mw but the beam was very very hard to see, if you didn't put the laser near your eyes in line with your sight, your wouldn't see it.

I guess it'll be more in the line of slightly purple-ish due to how pale the color would be in the dark.

808nm is on the red side of the spectrum.......if it was say 375nm then it'd be more purple

Interested in how much more visibility 780nm would provide. Might have to tinker today.

Very interesting.

Cool Norbyx. I saw a red dot from from a 532, right before the batteries died. Not a beam like you but it still tripped me out.

Your laser must be super bright with an IR scope though.

Well it is very hard to see... And as from what I know some don't even see it. It is interesting.

Well I usually wear protection when playing with lasers, actually I have 5 pairs of protective goggles, so I can play with my kids as well, and not worry too much, even if the most powerful laser I let them use with no supervision is a 5mw.

I had a need for a lower powered 808nm Laser for
some experiment. I took an ~10mW 532nm Laser and
removed the Crystals.. That gave me ~40-50mW of IR...
It is faint but I can see it on a non reflective surface
without goggles.

Pretty cool!

I think i'm particularly sensitive to IR, I can see a faint red dot across a completely dark 3m room from a <10mW 808nm extracted from a "dead" green pen.
Those 5W 808nm probably have a reasonably visible beam at night without fog...

As a curiosity: has anyone here ever been able to see the dot from a laser above 808nm?

Yup, I have a fibre coupled laser @ 835nm. Not much higher in wavelength but I can see the dot above about 100mW.
