Today was the day.

Well, I actually made the purchase a week ago, but today was the day I picked it up... my first gas laser. It's a green HeNe in the sub-2mW range and it it purdy.

LPF's wannaburnstuff was advertising a 543nm JDS Uniphase unit and I thought this would be the perfect start to my gas collection.

My camera is not great at color rendition, so perhaps I'll take some more beams with a different camera this coming weekend. Things I love about this laser already... the color is quite pleasing to the eye, the beam is tight... and I mean really crisp, not having to worry so much about duty cycle and battery life, the shutter, and it's my first.

I know these look like I just drew some lines on a black screen in MS Paint, but I wanted to at least take something to share when I got home...

This shot shows the beam size difference of the 532nm CNI GLP and the 543.5nm HeNe:

I just want to say thanks to wannaburnstuff for an extremely smooth and professional transaction... not to mention a great price and exchange of goods as advertised. I highly recommend dealing with him based on my experience. He actually worked with me to hold the unit and allow me to pick it up when I was in his city at a later date... AND to show appreciation for saving him shipping, he threw in some diodes, modules, and a pen laser as thanks. Top notch transaction all the way around.

If any of you have pointers for me as a new gas laser owner or advice on where to go next, please leave it here...

I get the feeling I might need more space. :)

Cheers!

update: a new camera (that records motion), the new HeNe, a black sheet of paper, an Old Fashioned made with my favorite bourbon on the planet - Garrison Brothers, and some fumbling around with movie maker... viola! (It looks better if you click through and watch it in HD)

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Congrats on grabbin' the green! It was a great deal and I'm glad it went to a good home!

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Welcome to the gaseous side! Mike is right... you're fate is sealed now!

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Glad to see you made it back alright and are enjoying it!

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Hey KapHn8d, congrats on your first gas (laser that is).
Looking forward to seeing some more of your photographic skills displayed with your new HeNe.

This has got to be the only place that someone is congratulated for having gas! :D

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Nice. I wouldn't mind a GreeNe myself.

what does the actual tube of a green HeNe look like? Are they green too or is it always a red colour?

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

It is still plasma, so it is a red color.

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

It's a salmon-ish color if the HeNe is healthy  I might have a 1mW GreeNe for sale soon too if you're interested

Hwang, that is a very good picture of an HeNe tube in your Avatar. I always find the plasma to be a difficult subject when photographing my lil 638.

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Welcome to the gassy side. Enjoy your new addiction. I too like you started with a green HeNe then got a small bare tube red, then a bare tube green (the two tubes in my avatar), then a multiline argon, then a small red head, a bare tube yellow, a yellow head and finally another multiline argon. You see where this is going? ;)

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Welcome to gas club:beer: Boy that laser looks familiar :p

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

lol saw this earlier and was at work so I forgot to comment...welcome to the gassy side!

and....

WELCOME TO YOUR DOOM!

Gas is quite a lot funner than diodes, and this is what truly starts to allow you to understand/play with lasers and their physics. Hope you enjoy your new HeNe!

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Haha n2stuff I cannot possibly imagine why! :P

Re: The seal has finally been broken.

Congratulations on your first gas laser! Let's see how long you can resist buying yourself a beast Argon

From personal experience, I think you'll get one in less than two months. :D The gorgeous spectrum is impossible to resist...
