The Closing of Threads issue....

Mods... Just do what you've got to do.

Moderating a forum is often a thankless task with lots of Catch-22 "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of situations.
 





And the drama revolving around these threads continues even in other sections. The topic itself, draws drama.

The comparison to WL forum is invalid and unfair. It is simply more expression of the frustration many feel surrounding this laser. Discussion about WL and the Arctic are still very welcomed. They just need to go in the sections designed for those discussions. If you have a laser, write a review. If you have a problem with WL write it up in the companies board or the feedback board. If WL did something good for you write it up in the companies board

If y'all just want to "chat" about he laser go to laserchat and do so. The valuable info in the threads (and there was some) would be MUCH more useful stored in a manner in which people can see and organize it.

All of your suggestions have been tried. No one can be here all the time. I was already spending more than two hours a day just policing those threads. I gave many strong warnings both in PM and in the threads. I gave many temp bans to give people time to cool off. Simon even finally got fed up and started giving temp bans. I even started just trying temp closing the thread to give EVERYONE time to cool off. NOTHING worked.

The ultimate deletion of the threads was already a foregone conclusion. The very existence of them was an attempt to give people a place to "vent." We knew that they were going to be deleted in the end after about 1/2 way through the second re-organization of them. Unfortunately, that "venting" led to an uncontrollable amount of drama. The experiment has failed. It is always disappointing when an idea doesn't work, but eventually one must face the reality of it and turn off the power

The topic itself drew the drama to it. I would rather chase down the sporadic errant post or thread about the laser than continue to waste my time in an endeavor that feels like trying to sweep marbles up a hill

I agree, all these threads on the arctic recently are getting really frustrating, too be honest they add absolutely nothing constructive too lasers or the hobby in general. I don't see why we should have to be a dumping ground for wicked lasers product discussion, yes it's laserpointerforums, not wickedlasersarticpointerforums. I think everyone is now pass the pre built arctic pointer stage, it's boring and not what the forum is about, its about furthering the hobby via research not listening to a bunch of 12 year olds posting the same product from a 1000 different angles. I think the threads should carry on being removed, eventually people will get the idea we don't want the stupid product posted about anymore on this forum.
 
I don't see what's so bad about a thread just for the arctic.....
Who cares if noobs create accounts JUST for the arctic?
Maybe it will get them interested in the entire hobby....
But until then this is a laser pointer forum....not a hardcore laser building fanatics only forum.

....and if they just start fights and don't read previous info and just post random stuff then ban them....
 
Yeah but that's typical everyday 4chan, HIMNL9. For some reason we're on their 'list" now, because "only losers like lasers".
 
Where do people get the idea that this is mainly a DIY forum from? It's a lot more like CPF. It has a large DIY community and also loads of people buying and posting about commercially built products. The forum itself says "discuss lasers and laser pointers". The arctic is a laser pointer.

Also I'm seeing a lot of posts that can simply be described as "hating on wicked". Now that's understandable considering the current mess and wicked's less than glorious past with this forum. However censoring all discussion on a certain product isn't the way to go.

Somehow I get the feeling that if Laserglow for example came out with a crazy new 1W green laser then people wouldn't be calling for all discussion of that laser to be removed from the forum even if it did draw in lots of noobs and trolls.

Oh, BTW, i don't have anything against 4chan in general, also if i'm not there ..... for me, is just another community, like a lot of others ..... only, sometimes, some of their /b/ users looks a bit "retarded" (but i suppose this is part of the fascination that attract so much users, there ..... :p :D)

Ssssh, we'll unleash their full fury!

/b/ (and indeed, the entire 4chan community) attracts a huge variety of people with nothing better to do (or people with plenty of better stuff to do, but can't be bothered to do it). Most of the time they stay on their own board, but they're like drunken tourists - occasionally they make sorties to other places, and generally make a mess of the place. While they're around they're a nuisance, but they get bored and move on before too long, and it hopefully doesn't take too long to clean up after them.

This is a predonomatly DIY forum? Yes you get the occasional GOOD reviews on commercial products but the forum is mainly about research, interest in the hobby and workings of lasers and custom lasers.

I have nothing against commercial lasers I enjoy the reviews, but this forum is not for posting hundreds of posts asking stupid, pointless and useless questions on a product that this forum has no more information than them about. Yes one or two reviews are nice, but once again not hundreds of threads posting the same thing, I mean it's a batch produced laser, they're near enough all the same thing, and a member that has never owned a laser before and just bought the arctic because it's cheap is not going to have anything of use to say are they? Apart from "it's a good lazor."

and this wouldn't happen with laser glow, because they wouldn't advertise a product they don't have ready, thus reducing bs posts asking when is there laser going to arrive. And so what if people have an issue with WL? All they do is lie, including personally to some of the vets, clog up our otherwise qiuet and productive forum, they're one of the most frustrating companies I've come across.

Hey I fully understand the wicked hate. I ordered my arctic on the 15th of june and still no sign of it even being shipped. I was the one tagging the thread with wicked liars all the time. They're a dishonest, unethical and flawed company. The main reason why I even care is because I like having a discussion thread to look for updates in. Also I've never liked censorship.

I agree that censorship should be kept to a minimum - ban/delete posts of trouble causing members but don't delete the discussion threads. I don't know why people are getting so upset over having a discussion thread. Advertising it may be, but all companies should be allowed to have their product discussed.
 
As a forum admin I have to say that I don't see the utility in deleting threads. Even if a thread devolves into complete crap, its locked carcass can still serve as an example of what not to do. Sure, the Arctic frenzy brought in a lot of undesirables, but as long as there was one big Arctic thread that's where they would stay, and even with all the fighting and whatnot, it was easily ignored for everyone who didn't want to see it by just not clicking on it. As long as the "drama" was contained in a single thread, I don't see what the big deal was. Now it's going to spill over into the rest of the board.

You can't keep people from talking about what they want to talk about. Not that you shouldn't, you can't. They'll either do it in one place or another. Like it or not, the Arctic is the big topic of discussion right now, and that's what people want to talk about. Deleting the thread just forces them to talk about it in the rest of the forum, and causes hard feelings all around.
