The amazing M-140 445nm diode?

You either need to be trying to or very, very careless...sorta like a cigarette lighter is a fire hazard. I think the more important question to ask is are they an eye hazard...the answer is definitely yes....I would be much more concerned with eye safety than fire safety.

When these things are in a desktop laser like I have they are most certainly a fire hazard. The MI140 I have in a CPU heatsink has no duty cycle so it's not like your sitting there worrying that it's going to overheat like a handheld so you end up doing things you wouldn't normally do with a handheld like walking away from it for a second with it on.

So I got a new M140 from DTR (Thanks) and I recently did power testing on it. Here are the results.
I used a G2 lens and the diode is mounted in a lab heat sink.
Unfortunately my laserbee A laser power meter only goes up to 2 watts so thats the highest reading I have. Heres the power graph.

At 1,500mA I got over 2,000mW output, probably around 2,030mW.

Nice. I have seen one that was a 1950mW @ 1.5A with a G-2 but that one is the best I have seen for sure. Nice find.;)

I agree, these are truly amazing diodes. I measured 1,740mW this morning from one at 1.5A and using a standard 3-element glass lens. Thanks for the power graph!
 
This is some exciting news. I am still waiting to get my half of a new M140 from my partner. He did some tests on his 12 and he was seeing anywhere from 850-1100 approx with 700ma current if i recall correctly.

Will be interesting to see what the next year holds in the newer versions they will undoubtably come out with.

I was thinking about it and I am really curious what kind of output I would get running at 1.7A. I'm thinking about buying one of those ophir LPM heads on ebay that you just hook up to a multimeter considering this isn't the first time I've needed a LPM that can handle more power. Anyone have any experience with them?

Honestly I think if I ran this diode at 1.7A I could get it to do 2,150mW easily and maybe even 2,300mW which would be (pardon my language) fucking incredible. It's incredible to think that just a few months ago a single 445 diode doing 2,000mW was extremely rare and even if you did have one that could do even close to 2,000mW the life time was going to be drastically reduced. Just want to say thanks again to DTR for providing great diodes and service. :thanks:

Those are very impressive numbers! I haven't tested this theory yet, but I have a strong suspicion that the power output of the diodes is not linear though.

Case in point: I had a diode that was putting out 994mW from a 5.52V input at 700mA, but when I put in in a host using a linear driver set to 1.62A the output was only 1.3W, using a standard Aixiz 3 element glass lense. Yet I had another that was ouputting 1,064mW (if memory serves me) at 700mA in and 5.16V that hits 2.3W in a dual flexdrive setup running at 1.8A, with a G2 lense.

Something to possibly look into?
 
I used one of DTR's M-140 diodes for a conservatively-built pocket mini for my wife. At 390mA current it's putting out 340mW.

Makes a nice indoor laser.
 
Wow, these seem to be pretty nice diodes. I've only played with a few A-140s but man do I want one of the M-140s.

Well i ordered 2 of these with the g2 lens about 2 months ago and I just got the first of the two running tonight. My brand new laserbee II metered it @ 2419mw........:eg:
