In here, you cant simply believes the data speed and throughput by looking at the (wifi) signal strength only :crackup:

I.e it's kinda useless installing so many router with strong signal if that particular hotel is only subscribing a 1MBps connection :crackup:. Well i guess you got the point.

As for Telkomsel, many ppl find that 3GB per 100K IDR is expensive in here, it's because many of the competitor gives more than 3GB for that price.

I know the other networks are cheaper for data, but telkomsel usually has better coverage in remote areas so i usually go for that. I've tried XL before, good in the city but that had a lot of dark spots even just driving between cities on java.

I was on gili T in january and noticed a lot of hotels and such had little boxes mounted halfway up a (preexisting tv) antenna pole. Perhaps these are actually 3G to wifi systems to provide wifi access for guests, not 100% sure.

Another interesting thing i discovered on sumatera: apparently the phone network has little or no battery backup: when mains power went out, so did all cell signals. Pretty annoying since they were moving an electrical line at the time and it would be off from dawn to dusk every day. They were moving the power line for making the road wider, i guess they just did a couple of poles every day and the connected stuff back at the end of the shift. This was jungle aceh though (ketambe/kutacane area).

Indonesia is big though, in really remote areas you can often forget about any kind of connection. When I was in irian jaya i flew to wamena. The small town has cell coverage but as soon as you walk out a few km it's 'no network' forever.

I think I just got a new record for my lowest ping at 1411 ms, the download speed is probably a new record for me as well: Speedtest.net by Ookla - My Results.
Usually the ping is around 70 ms for me.

On Windows you can ping in hex (figured it out when bored few years ago)...

For example this will ping 4.255.255.254

C:\windows\system32>ping 0x04FFFFFE -l 0

Pinging 4.255.255.254 with 0 bytes of data

I wish i had screenshots when my lovely provider at&t used to be at 40,000ms(yes you see that right 40 SECONDS) and they claimed it was my router...?(Oh, the AT&T router you issued to me because my own router was "causing the internet to slow"?)

Hehe.. fixed indeed. Curious how much variation there is, 48 ms or >1 second in the same bunch.

To get pings that long i need to ping some thing far away - like australia (from holland), results int something like this:

Local websites all ping in 10-20 ms (all figures over wifi too).
