Scanpro20's!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi everyone, im new to this but loving it! lol

ive always been interested in lasers, and just got this set that everyone is talking about (the scanpro20s with program board)

so i read that i need to get a DAC (that's digital to analogue converter, correct?) to connect this to my computer for programming and what not...

anyone know what DAC i should get?  Preferably cheap...no Pangolin $1500 stuff.. i am on a relatively tight budget as a college student lol

and what did everyone mount all the parts in?  im guessing some type of metal enclosure, but i havent the slightest clue where i would find something like that...i did some googling and came up with companies who want to contract, but no single orders for a peon like me lol

thanks!

or you could go with the sound card dac for about 60 dollars and use free programs like laserboy and spaghetti

blah... this isnt going to be as cheap as i thought lol. what about Norm's FrameStreamer Express (google it as i cannot post links yet) ... although id have to find it on ebay first, has anyone used that? However i dont see anything about analogue blanking on his DAC.

also, my motherboard on my desktop actually has a parallel port. surprised me lol..must have been one of the last few to have been made with one. but anyway, is there any chance of being able to hook the cable directly to the parallel port? or is it a digital signal that comes out of the port?

the dac isnt what has analog blanking its the laser module.

and sound card dac uses a usb sound card so you dont need to be worried about having a serial port.

parallel ports are digital - galvos need analog data input so it wouldn't work

i've seen norm's dac, but from what i've seen the Audio card dac system is more compatible with lasershow systems (norm's only works with his custom software as far as i'm aware)

Parallel port DACs are very unreliable. They are a very low priority on your system, so if somehting else decides to use the CPU, your laser will stop. Not good at all!

oh ok..i was under the impression that if the DAC didnt have analogue, you laser was either of or on (0v OR 5v), not "dim-able" (0v THRU 5v) regardless of if it was analogue or not.  ok tho, makes sense.  besides i think my laser module is TTL anyway :-/ ... its ebay item 360081680534.

so for this soundcard dac, any 5.1 soundcard will work?  and where might i find a list of components and a circuit diagram?  i didnt seem to find either in
http : // hacylon . case . edu / laser / LaserBoy /..

this would be my first PCB project.  i dunno whether i should be excited or nervous as hell lol

funny, according to Lehman's site, http : // www . akrobiz . com / laserboy / index . html , the business is literally right down the road from me

send james an email tell him josh sent you. he is a very nice guy and if he is that local im sure he would love for you to come by his house and check out his system and tell you all about laser boy!

haha.. i sent him an email.  he seems pretty cool.  thanks so much!

Wish someone from here or PL lived enar glasgow, so I could see their scanner, the nearest I think is andy_con, but it's still like 3-5 hours away :(

Quickie ----- I got my Scanpro20 running tonight !!!! SUPER !!!
The image is large in the room. Can I safely turn PR1 down to reduce the image size? I'll count the turns.
