Quadcopter Builds

I can't remember exactly right now, but from memory go into the Func Setting menu, scroll across to the 2nd "screen", and there's a setting there called AUX CH or something. You can choose what channels are mapped to what, by default they don't do anything.

Ah, tyvm!!

Oh and with the ESC power distribution I was getting at that it makes more sense to have board power on something not prone to fail, like ESCs are, but you're right that it's moot in a quad.

Welcome to the quadcopter fraternity!
I have a DJI F450 with a team black sheep frame, a tricopter, and a few other things! Been playing with these for about 2 years now, I'll post some YouTube links tomorrow.

Ch1 is your ailerons or roll
Ch2 is your elevator or patch
Ch3 is throttle
Ch4 is rudder or yaw

A lo tanto of the switches on here are geared for aircraft. You can tie a switch into other controls via the menu options. For example if you roll flaps you can automatically input elevator trim to compensate for the nose down attitude flaps induce. Kind of pointless in the multi rotor world. You can plug that ppm switch if you got it into Ch5 for example and power whatever sweetness you want and control it with the top right toggle switch on the front portion of the radio. I have mine set up to switch between stabalize (autohover) and auto which picks up the gps route and flies by itself. That way I can take back control if it decides to drop points and fly away.

Thanks to all your help I was able to fine tune the big quad today. I did some more reading once I figured out how to set the gear switch to ch5 and realized there were a few problems that needed to be corrected.

Several features on the Tx are not compatible fully with the IFLY FC;

Dual rates have to be set so default condition is high rate. Setting the other way prevents turning on and off the quad by remote as the FC looks for full rudder at near zero throttle for ignition switch inputs. You can't turn on the Turnigy 9x Tx with any switch out of default position without getting an error message.

The IFLY FC looks for flight mode information on the Gear channel and requires a two or three position stepped input of 0-10%, 50-60% (optional), and 90-100%. I suppose you could use a pot for this but this results in an undefined state in between the designated ranges. To use a 2pos switch like the 9x Tx has for Gear you set 0-10 and 50-60 ranges to the same drop down flight option.

The IFLY-4 has three flight modes;
Manual
Auto-balance
Auto-balance + altitude hold

In the altitude mode the throttle input is disabled and becomes a three state switch. 0-40% descends, 40-60% holds, 60-100% climbs.

This means that dual rates, hover throttle trim pot, fail safe, and throttle hold/cut functions on the 9X are only valid in Manual and Auto-Balance modes only.

Likewise, the IFLY FC has a firmware adjustable throttle idle speed that renders Throttle Cut inoperable as only a full rudder at low throttle will disengage motors completely. You can still use that switch for throttle hold but it doesn't serve much purpose this way.

If the throttle idle speed is adjusted below "high" in the firmware then throttle response below 20% stick is reduced drastically.

That all being said I'm quite happy with the quad and can't wait to take her out for a real flight soon!!

Edit; also I still can't find any info on the 3pos toggle switch marked Aux 3 F Mod on the Turnigy 9x Tx. It appears to have zero effect in helicopter mode though as confirmed by watching all outputs and inputs on the five channels while testing every stick and switch.

I have the Tx's craft type set to Heli-1 as the manual states this is independent aileron, elevator, and rudder action. It would appear that the four Heli modes in the Tx firmware are swashplate designations. This is irrelevant for a multi rotor but I'm not sure what, if any, effect the other modes will have on performance.

Nice :D

Did a flight time test on the Turnigy quad today. On a 5Ah pack it seems to get about 15 minutes, not doing anything too aggressive. A 5Ah pack is probably on the verge of a bit too big for this size quad though, so you could probably get a bit longer with a lighter battery. Has no issues lifting it with plenty of power to spare though.

What's the "wheel-base" of the SK450? I'm guessing 450mm, right? lol. Same size as the IFLY-4 if so. I haven't ordered the large battery yet but reports are saying 15-17min flight time for mostly-hover type flights on the IFLY-4 with a 5Ah battery, so that sounds about right. Can't wait for the warm weather so I can give it a proper flight with the 2.45Ah battery I have and see how long she'll fly. I'm kind of torn between getting several 2.6Ah cells or a single 6Ah cell, but I'm leaning towards the multiple smaller ones. Any opinion?

I did some flight time testing on my Hubsan X4 today now that I have three (240mAh) batteries and the prop guard (weighs 2.5g). I'm getting about seven minutes of flight time with the prop guard and LEDs on.

I put the second set of props on when I put the guard on because the first set are dinged up pretty well from learning to fly and getting it trimmed/calibrated since it wouldn't do anything other than fly across the room straight out of the box. I think these props might be less well balanced because despite being nearly ding free there's some issues with it yawing when hovering that won't trim out.

I gave the prop guard its first real test today as I popped the quad into expert mode and tried an aileron flip. It sure doesn't recover flips well, lol. I had it a few cm from the ceiling (just enough to not clip the ceiling upon full 90deg roll) before initiating and it still hit the floor. Prop guard did its job though and prevented breaking/losing a prop or two, but it busted one of the support bars on the prop guard. C'est la vie. I wasn't expecting it to take 7 and a half feet to execute a flip! I don't plan on doing tricks with the quad as it doesn't interest me, but I was curious how it would handle anyway.

450mm diagonal motor to motor, yes.

Go with the smaller packs, if the 6Ah ends up being too heavy you're not at a loss then.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking when doing some rough math on flight times. I found some 2.2Ah quality packs at a price point where I could get a telemetry system for the difference in cost. 6.6Ah of combined capacity for $25 or a single 6Ah pack for $50..., when you factor in the weight difference of 188g vs 490g and that fact that with telemetry I'll know exactly when to swap packs it just made sense.

I'll have a total of 9Ah in battery capacity, I wonder what total flight time I'll get!

Now just to rig up a decent camera and wait on the weather.

The addiction has taken hold, there's no going back for you now :D

The props become a bit ridiculous too ..

Then the copters start having babies .. :D

About 40Ah in the pic. Should my house ever burn down, there's no saving it :p

AMAZING video !!!! Sometimes, I see the mortar
lift charge on the ground.
I won't be trying that ...............

The snow finally melted so I took my IFLY-4 out for a maiden voyage today. Unfortunately it ended badly, very quickly. I busted a prop! I got liftoff and achieved a grand total of 5 feet of air before a gust came and threw her about ten meters. I went to land her and a downdraft came and toppled her right before touchdown. Despite the ESCs supposedly being able to detect an obstruction and shut down before prop damage occurs, one prop sheared right off. No other damage occurred. I'll have to adjust the flight system a bit to see if I can make it more aggressive at correcting for wind.

New props have been ordered.

Unfortunately it will be almost two months before we get any calm weather. I thought 5mpg winds would be calm enough, but we do get random gusts 3x the steady wind at this time of year.

I wish there was a prop guard cage for this quad, it seems like landing could be problematic given the bounce the legs have and any random downdrafts.

It's so awesome to see fellow rc fans here too!
