Power Meter Calibration and Comparison

We discussed adding the full mailing addresses on the spreadsheet. We opted not to do that because some folks have issues with thier mailing addresses posted for everyone to see.
 





it was discussed in the chat on the spreadsheet when it was first made. not everyone was privy to the discussion but it made a good point. Even on a forum with folks as good friends as we are here, we are still not all that close.
 
still waiting on an update for the lasers from pseudo. I' mailed them last weekend so I know he's got them by now. I'm getting anxious to see how my meters match up to his.
 
I e-mailed and PM'd him twice, because I was next, and then the list got changed. But he never responded to my messages?? Maybe he is on vacation or something...

Sorry for the wait guys, but am I doing something completely boneheaded here or what? I got the box with 2 lasers and one PSU. I plugged the red into the PSU and it works well - the unit is labelled 126mW and I'm getting readings ~124.5-125 at its peak.

However I plugged the blu-ray into the same PSU and I'm not getting a mW over 0. I tried powering the blu-ray directly from my own PSU and the diode is still working fine, but am I doing something wrong in trying to power it perhaps? Or is this PSU faulty? :-/
 
so the bluray doesn't work when plugged into the existing power supply but if you connect (through the connector at the end of the wire) to your psu you can get the bluray to work?  Or are you hooking it to the diode directly?  Cause I coulda swore I glued those babies shut so they couldn't be opened up.

Oh and there is an additional driver in the bluray that utilizes the 9v from the psu.
 
If the red's working, then the PSU seems fine... it puts out ~9V, so there is no reason it would work for one but not the other.

I'm with Kenom, how exactly are you connecting it to your own PSU? It sounds like a connection issue.

Heh, no I wouldn't start taking apart any of the setup without permission first. I just tried sticking 6V through the connector and I was getting some violet output (didn't test the power yet - wasn't sure if there was another driver in the head or not. Anyway, was that PSU meant to power either the red of violet laser? That's what I was guessing but it seems I may have guessed wrong  :-/.
 
no your right it was designed to run BOTH. Just swapping the units and go. I can't for the life of me think of anything to explain the issue. you say you get a small amount of violet light with the 6v through the connector, I'm curious what's going on here. It was all workin wonderful for me not long ago....
 
The PSU should work with both. That's the idea.

What polarity did you use when you used your own PSU? 6V is not enough for the driver to regulate, so there's no point in measuring that. You need 9V. But it has to work with the supplied PSU, or it has to be fixed.

What happens if you wiggle the plug of the blu when in the original PSU?


Now this may sound bad, that a problem appeared at the first attempt, but it's actually better, that it didn't happen half way in the middle....
 
Maybe the PSU is for some unknown reason outputting less than 6V but enough for the red to regulate?
 
Hmm.. Yeah, the red could regulate from as little as 5V... Especially since it's at a low current.. At the same time the blu might not even light up.

It's actually a very likelly explanation. But it was tested before it was shipped out. Why would it just drop in voltage?
I always think of cables and plugs when something just stops working.. I've been driven crazy with them over the years...
 
Have you tried measuring the output voltage on the PSU?

If you can't reach inside the connector, the PSU opens up by simply taking out the four screws on the one side.... unless Kenom has tamper-proofed the PSU too ;)
 
No I havn't tamper proofed the psu.  I do recall I cut into one of the cords and ended up putting more heatshring tubing over it.  Another option is the connector inside is shorting to the other pin so that both connectors are shorted out or *shudder* it got damaged in transit. That being the case I'm going to start fililng a claim. Damn thing was marked fragile, had insurance, and one arrives not working. clear cut case to me!
