Great job on those Northern Lights photos Gabe, they aren't the easiest to capture well but you did a good job! :)

Gabe, nice shots man but I find it very hard to view them properly even if I reduce my browser down to 50%.
I really need to go down to 25% and then it makes it impossible to read.
The images are huge at 6000 x 4000 pix.
If you can reduce them for us, it would really be make it so much easier for us to view.

Yes Pete, it's the same one.
It's always looking for a feed and now its coat has turned speckled white/grey with the black spots.

Thanks so much everybody! It really means a lot. As much as it hurt my high-res loving soul, I resized them all (by a factor of THIRTY SIX pixel wise!). Plus I added an album with the full res photos and some more. Oh I almost forgot to say, I also got one of my northern lights photos in the city newspaper! Was pretty proud of that. :)
 
RCB, yes, it will be nice once I get home, but this isn't so bad, not really.

Gabe, I looked to see what camera you are using, but didn't see it mentioned, what is it? My wife is just now getting into photography after spending 3 years working with photoshop, studying online courses, she is very good with that program and a few other Adobe graphic programs now, but did not have anymore more than an iPhone for a camera before. Just bought the Nikon D7200 for her, should be delivered soon.

Oh sorry, I have a Nikon D3200, you got your wife an excellent camera :) Once the user can figure out all the features of the camera and how to use them, they can take excellent photos. It's all about knowing your camera and knowing your subject!

How did you pull that off?
I did a similar shot of a full beer bottle smashing to the ground but I used a different technique.
Would love to know how you timed this one.
Also those Auroras are magnificent, my dream is to get to see one.
Those LED strips yield a fascinating backdrop to the shot, Love It.

Thanks so much Andrew! I had my camera set to 1/4000 sec, probably f8 or something and base ISO (100) because using phone cameras has given me an allergy to photo noise. I had taken another broken bottle photo earlier that day but it was overcast and raining, so it was nothing too spectacular. The sun had just come out as it was about to set, that's why the photo has that great golden tinge to it. I was using the continuous shutter release on my camera to get a better chance of getting the shot, however my camera isn't too fast on continuous (4 pictures per second) so there is an element of chance in there. I was a better shot with the slingshot, so I got the photo framed up and had my friend hold down the shutter button while I shot at it. I had a small number of bottles, so we were lucky to pretty much nail the timing on the first shot of the setup! Getting the bearing in the shot was awesome :D
Although if you practice for a couple minutes before photographing something like this, you can time it yourself and often get better timing and consistency pressing the button once yourself rather than taking a bunch of photos and hoping, plus you end up with a lot less junk photos to delete later this way. I take my water drop photos that way, just a single timed shot rather than a burst.
Northern lights are pretty spectacular if you're lucky enough to see a good show, next time you head out of the city or hear news of a large enough geomagnetic storm, I'd reckon it would be possible for you to spot some southern lights around where you are! Rarely are storms that big to be seen from too far from the poles, but it's possible every few years. Heck, once during an extreme geomagnetic storm way back in the past, the Aurora were so bright and so extensive across the globe, some observers reported being able to see the northern lights to the north of them at the same time as seeing the southern lights to their south!

It do's drive me absolutely insane though when you give a dog a nice piece of steak or so and they just swallow it instead of chewing and enjoying it for all its tender goodness:cryyy:
I did know a women who refused dog food and hand cook tasty chicken meals every day with all the fixings fit for a king for her poodle. This one did chew and lived to around 19 years old.

Thanks. It is the 8th largest stadium in the world with a capacity of slightly less than 102,000. I was surprised how stable it is even in the nosebleed seating. I've been in much smaller stadiums that shook quite a bit even when the crowd goes crazy.

It's kinda funny timing but all the focus this morning is tonight's Monday night football game in Mexico's Estadio Azteca stadium and boy is that place big. Still though 20,000 less seats.
Now on the other end I grew up when my beloved Patriots "use" to play in the most embarrassing "Sheafer stadium". It was like a kids play ground with like room for 15,000, no seats just long metal benches.
DR- Evil, never experienced the college fan crowd but i'm sure you had a blast:beer: and in that stadium to boot.

How to annoy video game purists: Me playing Duke on my Macbook:

Although there are technically "better" ways to do it, like source ports, sometimes it's nice to return to the grass roots and there's nothing quite like playing DOS games on top of real DOS. It's (almost) as good as real DOS on real hardware, without the impracticalities of having such ageing hardware around. It brings very fond memories of me playing Duke on my 486 laptop from the 90s, which in its day was probably quite a powerhouse as Duke required a 486 and a hardware accelerated graphics card. I remember the sound drivers on that laptop being really flaky, and it was a period when device drivers on Windows were something of a dark art to get right. I'd often fire up Duke and listen to the background OST at the pause menu, as it was easier and more reliable than trying to play them through windows.

Amazing shots Gabe! You may advocate yourself as an amateur photographer but from my perspective these are very professional :D My favorites are the high speed coffee shots ;)
