I'm wondering if these spectrometers wouldn't work better with the OEM software. Only one way to find out. This spectro with the developed software isn't close to my USB2000 in accuracy or its ability to do other types of testing. Still thinking of getting the OEM software. Ocean Optics allows one to use theirs in a trial for a month free of charge. Don't know if that is possible with the B&W Tek one.

I had heard some of these were on eBay. Looks right. It would be cheaper to go through Astralist, though.

It certainly seems a little pale, but why would the manufacturers go to all of the trouble of not only doping just the center of the rod, but also finishing a rough gem boule?

Also keep in mind that Cr³⁺ doped stones can look different under different lighting conditions.

It may have been manufactured to be used as a laser rod, but failed to turn out, so they are selling it for jewelry. It is only $30.00.

Yeah it definitely does look like a laser rod with that center doping, and I agree with the statement that lighting has a dramatic effect on the appearance of laser rods.

Usually you see ruby laser rods have a Cr3+ doping percent of 0.05%. That being said I've come across several in the range of 0.01%, which look very pale by comparison. Here's a listing for a lower doping ruby: https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-ruby-r...372034?hash=item3d1c187d42:g:IP0AAOSwzJ5XT1As

All that being said, there's no guarantee that it would actually lase. :p imperfections on the faces or in the rod itself could make it useless as a laser. Like paul said there is a chance it didn't meet laser specs and that's why it is being sold so cheap. Luckily it is cheap enough for experiments, but if you are wanting to build a ruby laser, the crystal itself usually is not the most expensive part of the project.

I wish we knew how to read the box code on the block, there should be a GBall lens number in there and some work very well GBall intact with a 3X BE, so far I get half that are useable and 1/4 that are very good, the GBall is a seemingly very efficient lens and these diodes will do 7 watts from what I have seen.

Side by side with a nubm44/3 element and 3XBE a " Good focus " nubm05's GBall with a 3XBE will hold it's own at 25 feet burning cardboard, could possibly be a little stronger at the point, now if the nubm44 is used with a G2 and 3XBE then the spot is wider than the ( Good focus ) GBall 05 and 3XBE

It's a real shame these don't have a can/window version, they appear to be 2 watts stronger than the 7A75 with the same raw emitter divergence.

The 44 and 08 are triple divergent, 05,06,07,7A75/7K75 are double, and m-140/7875 are single divergence to put it in simple terms if I'm not all wet, but I believe that's about the facts.
