Figured if this is the tech forum/geeks' corner so what better place for this thread? I'm fairly sure I'm not the only laser enthusiast that mods their computers (especially given the OverClocking threads going on).

Post a pic of your case mod(s) here and if you want to post specs go ahead!


I'll start things off (Project names link to worklogs):

"Project: Christine"
Started out as an original IBM PC (dual 5 1/4" floppies, no HDD, 8088 processor), and ended up as my take on a mod based on the Steven King book of the same name. Watercooled AMD +3200 single core. Old hardware but still works and was my fourth case mod ever . Favorite of all my cases so far.

"Project: Ultimedia"
This case started of with just a window mod in a cheap, thrown away aluminum case and blossomed into a nice Multimedia Center PC. It has a 5.1 surround sound mixer, professional audio card (bite me Soundblaster, you can't touch this ), dual video cards, DVR hardware, five SATA 500GB harddrives, stealthed DVD-RW, 4" LCD and more lights than you can shake a stick at.

"Project: Big Blue"
An old server case that was thrown away by a previous employer. Modified to host my main computer components. I'll list them later but here is the case (which includes a nice 6" lcd). Worklog linked above has a nice video of this LCD in action

I have a nice looking case, some fan lights and a CLEAN setup. But no mods for now (next PC I buy I'm gonna design a 100% acrylic see-thru case).

I love the server case-mod especially - that blue shade you get is really impressive. My only "case-mod" as such was when I mounted a 360mm radiator in the front of my Antec 1200 - and that didn't involve a dremel except for 2 screws, so it wasn't a "real" case-mod at all

@bschott: What type of professional sound hardware is in your Ultimedia mod? I have a music studio at my house, at it's heart is a Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer with a firewire audio interface. It's a 16 channel system at 96kHz/24bit with latencies below 1ms. AWESOME for 5.1/7.1 production, although I use it primarily for producing dance/techno tracks.. Ableton Live 7 software, HUGE collection of VSTs from every imaginable company (NI, Cakewalk, Arturia, etc..) Midi controller is an M-Audio Keystation 88.

I use a matched stereo pair of Blue Microphones Dragonflies (shock mounted and pop filtered) for vocals. You'd be surprised how much a vocalist comes alive when you put them in front of that setup. They know they're gonna sound good, so they really let it fly..

As a backup I have an E-MU 1212M inside the PC itself, just in case something happens to my Mackie.

On topic: The case is a run of the mill white $30 case. I like computers that are deceptively mild looking, but absolutely scream on the inside.

It's about 1 1/2 years old, and is running an Athlon FX-62 OC'd to 3.4GHz, just one HD 3870 video card and 6GB of OCZ Reaper DDR-800 RAM (stock timings)..

It's probably technically possible, but there are better options. For example, phase change cooling.

I know of at least one cooler with a built-in TEC: the Coolermaster V10. But, it's absolutely enormous and will rip your motherboard apart if you don't install it properly. So I'm going with the slightly more sane option: the V8.

I hate TEC, it's extremely inefficient for this tasks and REALLY expensive. There's just no reason to use it other than marketing "OMG IT HAZ TEC C00LINGZ0r!!".

When it comes to air cooling with big heatsinks there's not more to it than the current solutions.

Ok...Here is my computer that I made. This isn't really a mod though.

My wires are a mess on this computer though.

Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz OC to 3.0ghz (was at 3.6ghz water cooled)
