oclaro 700 638nm first build advise.

If you are going to buy your diode from DTR, you might as well get it with the driver set and attached. It will be a basically solder the wires to the contact board screw it into the heat sink and you are done. That diode doesn't need to be separated from the driver like higher power diodes are and it would be better this way. Also, take a page from my play book and always check the diodes pinout diagram. Never assume that you know how it should be wired.

You're definitely right man I've been looking at all of them just to get an idea, I've noticed on his site and a lot of reviews on here that DTR has made it easy by attaching all that stuff for you where as a long time ago I believe you had to do it all yourself. That's great for people like me. Haha, and to be honest I don't think I would be able to solder leads onto the diode pins without ruining the diode, I heard you had to be fast and flawless :D
 
Awesome! So I guess my next question is that I've noticed that most all the diodes that DTR sells with an exception of 1 or 2 are all case not used, so does that mean they're almost all meant to be wired the same? I know IR and some 650-660s are different. Once again thanks so much VV for the help, I appreciate you all helping me so much for my first build

I wouldn't assume they're all the same, a little research goes a long way. Only Take a a minute to check, I do for every diode, even if it's one I've used before

There's no need to shy away from getting some diode pin solder practice. I've build tons of ~300mw 660nm just to hone my skills. Now I only kind of have stress freak outs when I'm soldering more expensive diodes. For now, stick to preattached drivers from Jordan, but don't poo poo the awesome feeling of building a build from scratch :D just my couple of pennies

I agree. Also if you have good solder, and some flux/tinner, You should only need to just tag the leads with the iron and the solder will flow onto them. I'd give it a shot on some random components first if you're nervous. It's not too difficult if you've got a steady hand. :)

Good advise though, you guys are def right, can't hurt to practice a little. I would definitely love to say I know how, I actually don't know too much about what the flux is for. I'll have to learn more about that stuff.
 
If you get serious about soldering, you might invest in a temperature controlled solder station. You can change the tips and get a better outcome with the size of the tip. As far as flux goes, unless you are doing reflow work, most solders have a rosin core flux inside the solder, so you needn't even concern yourself with that.
 
Sorry to hear the diode died:/ did you ever reply regarding the duty cycle you were running at?
Arctic silver 5 is pretty readably available. Unless youre a boss and can make you own! That's interesting Paul.

Soon I'll be doing a build with the mitts 500. Speaking of drivers, iirc DTR sells the diode/driver combo with a flex drive? I think I just have an X boost that's adjustable. Been a while since I've meddled in this wave length.
