oclaro 700 638nm first build advise.

Pman, why do you need to isolate the LPC-826? I haven't built anything with one of these, but the specs are the same as the 836 and the 840. The case is neutral and it has a case pin on the diode, but I never had to isolate my builds with the 836 or 840.

Wait what?! The case pin is the negative on those diodes.

I looked everywhere for a data sheet on the LPC-836, but after a long search found only the LPC-826 and a pinout diagram for it showing the case pin is the cathode pin also. I had to take a build I made with an LPC-836 to find that it is indeed the same as the 826. It's a good thing I never rely on my memory to any laser diode any longer as I have found it is not as good as it was when I was younger. So, with the case held with the case pin in the down position, the anode is the pin on the right and the case pin is the cathode on all the LPCs. My mistake, and I am truly sorry.

Lol it's all good. I've made many many lpc builds. The negative case is one of my favorite parts as I don't have to worry about the negative connection when I'm squeezing my own driver into tiny builds. I just use the host :D

Okay so I hope I didn't make an error, I purchased an anodized heat sink for my 638nm build, I'll be making a switch to the Mitsu 500, can I use this heat sink or do I have to have a conductive heat sink? I'm a little confused.

What host are you going to use? You mentioned the heat sink, but not the size. I'm assuming it is aluminum. I'm hoping you aren't going to put it into a 501B or similar host. The Mits has a seperate case pin and doesn't need to be isolated, so that shouldn't be an issue for you.

I'm using the C6 from survival. And the standard 12mm module black heat sink.

I'm not familiar with survival's stuff. Is that C6 a small host with an aluminum heat sink? I put one in a Cyprus II all copper host. If you go to my user page and look at the albums you will see it there. It is a good example of what I prefer for these diodes.

Yes it is. It's actually much smaller than I thought it was, probably too small, if I end up just using it I'll have to make sure I make the cycle low, around 30 sec :( and yeah it's got an aluminum heat sink. I love those Cyprus hosts, they're so elegant.

That's my feeling as well. If you just have to use that small host, make sure that you limit the duty cycle to under a minute. Now, there maybe some people who will say that this is overly cautious, but I prefer to err on the side of caution than to destroy an already pushed to the limit build.

Yes you're absolutely right, especially pushing it over an amp. I'd rather take your advise. Thanks again :)

Hi Richie,
How's the build coming along?
Danny

I actually havnt started yet :(
I'm actually still looking for information about the mitsu500, I still need a new things like a soldering iron and still trying to decide between mitsu500 and oclaro700. I think I'll go with the mitsu. It's case neutral right? Doesn't that mean I can wire it anyway? This whole case pin thing still confuses me a little

The center pin is the case pin, the pin to the right of it is the anode(+) the pin to the left of the case pin is cathode (-)
Danny

So when I purchase the mitsu500 from dtr since it's already wired with leads then should I just solder the pos and neg leads to pos and negative leads on driver/pill and make a small solder to brass ring and driver and it should be ok. Thanks again for help

Yes, red being positive
Danny

Awesome! So I guess my next question is that I've noticed that most all the diodes that DTR sells with an exception of 1 or 2 are all case not used, so does that mean they're almost all meant to be wired the same? I know IR and some 650-660s are different. Once again thanks so much VV for the help, I appreciate you all helping me so much for my first build
