I've been wanting to build a nixie clock for a while. The temptation keeps getting stronger. The IN-18 tubes look like they would be perfect but they are pricey. Is there anything else close to the size of the 18s?

I was going to buy a nixie clock to make a perfect christmass present for my father that loves tubes. I guess I will keep an eye on this thread since I am also interested in the answers...

That's one of the reasons I've been wanting to build one. IN-18s aren't cheap though.:cryyy:

Nop not cheap at all....I now am waiting for two HeNe lasers to make two plasma lamps.

I love my IN-18 nixie clock as well as my nixie thermometer and nixie watch(s)

Dont forget to have a play with dekatrons and magic eye tubes too!

Do you put custom wrappers on your 16340's? Thats awesome haha.

I like nixies, but I think those vfd tube clocks are sexier:

i did a similar unit to that Blord with the IN-9 tubes.. a sound pressure level meter :D

Actually it is just the ebay sellers which sell the tubes at such a high price. If you go to some countries of the ex-shorawi there are surplus places where you can get these tubes at dirt cheap.

The down side with nixies, aside from their efficiency, is that they get cathode poisoning frequently that would ruin the display.

The cheapest one I've seen is $19. That's just the starting bid and it doesn't say used or new old stock. There is only one though. After that they go up to $38.12 a piece. The cheapest ones I've found not on Ebay are $40 each.

Ooooh, Nixie Tubes. I had some busted avionics that I turned into a Nixie Tube altimeter years ago. Next time I'm out at the field, I'll get a picture.
