New Boost Driver ????

Yeah, no more than 200 if you want any kind of reasonable "life" for it. People and their shenanigans

I was clearing out bookmarks and looked at this again. I just noticed. Not only is he asking $29 for the driver --

He has a fixed $10 for shipping!!!!:crackup:

He must use a VERY high quality envelope to mail it in :san:

Or maybe it's the elaborate ESD precautions he needs to take.

Peace,
dave

guys i ordered 2 of these.. i already tested it on a PHR.. but i will still go with our very own Flex drive...

^ i may also be in error, but the IC used, looks suspiciously similar to the LT and AS series that i tried times ago, especially the AS1329 ..... when you receive your ones, can you please look if the part number on the IC is like "ASP*" (where * can be A, B or C, depending from the load serie, mine was C)

Just for see if it's the same IC or not, i'm curious :D

:crackup:Apparently eBay didn't like his $10 shipping charge on something that would fit into an envelope. He ended that auction. Then he re-listed them. However, NOW instead of $29 PLUS $10 shipping -- they are $39 with free shipping:crackup::crackup:

^ LOL, it's a common trick, perhaps ..... i see it used from many seller, especially when they have stocks ..... (maybe also for keep ebay fees low ?)

Searching for contactless thermometers, as example, the last time i've found the same item as:

$ 29,9 plus $ 5,9 shipping
$ 19,9 plus $ 15,9 shipping
$ 9,9 plus $ 25,9 shipping

From the same seller :tsk:

Also, sometimes, found interesting items starting at 19 $, with a shipping price of 50 or 100 $

Always look careful at the shipping costs :wtf: :D

Of course its Wannaburn. That's one of Pat's monitor bugs LOL.

Ultra lame. My respect for the man just fell off the table.

And what the hell is he doing using my name in his product line I'm gona sue....:barf:

you guys seriously dont know who that is? who had a kid recently so thats the reason they havent been on the forum..? there was a big arguement between me and him about his clear ESD bags if some of the vets remember...

wait for it.....

wait for it....

the name wannaburn ring a bell...?

his "clean room" is actually an extra room in his house thats no diffenent than anyone elses extra bedroom. dont be foolded by him or his "spectacular" products...

Haha, i actually just wrote Dave a PM about this, then i stumble onto your post...

The driver, as soon as i saw it, reminded me of something, and then i started thinking..

Whom did i help make their own drivers a year ago? RIGHT!

Unfortunatelly they told me the drivers were for personal use - cos they didn't trust FlexDrives... I was never told the drivers would be used in lasers for sale or that the drivers themselves would be for sale..

EDIT: The statement in gray above is false, i confused Wannaburn with someone else. Wannaburn never claimed he would not use the drivers in lasers for sale, or sell them, i confused two slightly similar situations. I was told from the very beginning the drivers would be used in lasers for sale. Just wanted to clear this up.

What happened in the end was, that the driver became a DIRECT copy of Woop's driver (anyone remember Woop?) - plans posted and burried deep in the Experiments and Modifications section of this forum...

Woop is not around anymore and can't complain, and i can only regret ever offering any help (i have my own reasons - the things sold to people on e-bay, like diodes with fake ratings and similar)...

I use the same chip in a different package and on my own board half that size.... Phenol, Woop and I started working on these (each on our own version but with the same chip) simultaneously a LONG time ago... Must be two years by now... Dave still remembers that thread..

I wanted to comment on the strange way the driver's "specs" are posted (or rather NOT posted):
- No input voltage range (min, max?)
- No output voltage range (again, min, max?!?)
- No max current declared (at which current will the boost IC melt it's own solder joints and start floating around on them?!? And no this is not a joke).
- Does it have reverse polarity protection? (no...)
- Does it have no load operation protection (guess..)

I know the answers to these questions (from the photos), but the buyers won't, and apparently, nor does the seller?

I can also see that the coil is now a cheaper one (CoilCraft only sends out free samples for so long) and all capacitors are tantalums... And yet the auction claims "no ripple"... Tantalums are not as good as ceramics at filtering high frequency ripple. And i can only see three of them. When i was testing my own driver on a scope i ended up with five capacitors in order to reduce the ripple (not remove - it's impossible to remove it completelly on switching drivers). And many of them had to be ceramics of small values in parallel with a large value for spike absorption...

I wonder if the seller knows anything about the limitations of this design (or electronics in general), when even the specs are not declared in a useful way..

And yet their driver "is the only driver of its kind" and "it provides a clean output to the laser, with absolutely no spikes or ripple. While providing specs that absolutely cannot be matched by any other 405nm driver.".... (Wait specs? Where?!? I must have missed them!)

Hmm, in that case, it can't possibly be a direct copy of Woop's driver, can it?!? Maybe i just got confused by the layout being so identical to Woops... Yeah, that must be it! (ok, ok, parts were moved around slightly, but in general it's still pretty much identical)

P.S. At first i thought these drivers were now factory manufactured (they were sold on ebay before, etched and soldered by hand), but i was wrong... It's the boards that are factory made, the soldering is still done by hand, as is evident on the solder joints. Especially on the coils..

P.P.S. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with theses drivers. But they were not developed and tested by the seller over the past year!
And they can't go over 400-500mA, even if the 500mA Schottky was replaced with a bigger one, because as i mentioned before, this package of the chip can not dissipate enough heat, and would burn up or melt it's own solder, even if heatsinks were attached to it....

I guess it's the exaggeration and lies with which the drivers (and other things) are sold, that annoy me...

That driver sounds an awful lot like Igor's...

I wonder what he would have to say about this...

And I may be wrong but l don't remember reading that 8x's need up to 9 volts to lase.

Jesus, how would you have guessed that?!?

Nothing in the description hinted towards similar specs as my driver (since no specs are mentioned), most of the description is just big words and a lot of exaggeration, without any NUMBERS (and numbers matter a lot when it comes to electronics!)...

When i say "numbers" i'm talking about the missing specs i already mentioned, or the Peak-To-Peak value of the "nonexisting" ripple on this superior driver... Oh right, if it's nonexisting it's zero, right? Well, my driver's ripple is 15mV peak-to-peak... So i guess his driver is better.. :yabbem:

Lava at least knows what he is doing (he is an electronics engineer!) and doesn't rip you off with the driver price and bloated shipping...

It's not the same IC..

It's not the same IC..

Thanks ..... anyway, was just curiosity.

I don't own any copyright, and the few times i published some schematics, it was for public use, so i'm not asking for copyright reasons.

Just curious, if that was the same IC, to understand how he can have obtained the "8-9vdc" that is cited in the description, about diode needs, from an IC that in my tests never gave me more than 5,7V :p :D

But if it's not the same, the thing have a sense :D
