Neighbors hate lasers!

Also (but take it as a semi-serious suggestion, ok ? ;)), get a <1mw keychain laser of the same color of your big one, and let them call cops ..... then give the big one to a friend that go away before the cops arrives ..... then, show them the keychain pointer and ask to the cops "sorry, i thought that less than 1 mw lasers are allowed anywhere, can i ask you who called you, giving you false informations ?" ..... and see what happens (:eg:)

I agree with the cheap laser idea here. Cops will be cops and do what they want (not fair, but unfortunately it's reality). e.g. they may confiscate your laser only to have a judge find in your favor and order it returned. If your neighbors lied/exaggerated and said you pointed it at them (felony right?) They don't need to have witnessed the act in order to confiscate it. Better to risk losing a cheap laser and see what they do on the initial confrontation than to play lawyer and risk your expensive laser.

hey angel do you think my neighbors across the street would mind me shinning my RPL at them lol (airport)
i hate having an airplane leave every ten minutes i told all my kids no lasers outside without me there

Never use RPL pointers for shine to airplanes ..... better use the new Rofin DC 080 W pointer .....

ehm, "pointer", cough .....

BTW, 080 W don't mean "80 watt" ..... :p :eg:

Guys, one thing to keep in mind, this may very well NOT be a simple case of "I can use my laser anywhere/anytime and it's legal". Especially if you have a powerful laser, outdoor use of lasers IS regulated by the federal government, by both the FDA and the FAA. Shining a 200mW green laser up into the air to show it off to your friends, depending on interpretation, could very well require FDA certification and FAA certification for what you're doing. Please don't go off half-cocked defending your knowledge of laws while completely over-looking the organizations that actually do all the regulating of laser usage in the US, the FDA and FAA.

Do some searching, here's a link to get you started: Laser Show Safety

From that page: "If you use lasers in an outdoor environment in the U.S., and the laser beam enters navigable airspace, then you are required by federal law to report such activity and receive a letter from the Federal Aviation Administration that does not object to such activity."

Sounds like to me that what you're doing very well could be illegal, so please do all the research. It's often not cut and dry.

the police have to see YOU shine it, or the neighbours have to supply proof. Oh and you NEVER HAVE TO open the door for the police (unless they have a warrant)

Let me give you guys a real world lesson. Now listen up.

The police can do whatever they want. They can make up any excuse to enter your house, car, property, ect. They can detain, arrest, or take you out for a beating at anytime. They can take, break, steal, and impound your stuff. In short they can make your life a living hell for no reason at all and there is nothing you can do about it.

If you are approached by an officer never lie, quote laws, or give them any lip what so ever. It's YES SIR, NO SIR, OK SIR. Worst case scenario, just don't say anything at all.
And maybe a "PLEASE SIR DON'T TAKE ME TO JAIL."

..... The police can do whatever they want. .....

TJ, yes, this is true, but let me say you a thing (and this is not an attack to your ideas, is just how i feel it :)).

Police must understand one simple thing, too ..... they must understand that there are limits that you can't pass, and these limits varies from peoples to peoples ..... and they must understand that, passing these limits, they can be subject to anything, literally.

I am a quiet man, but not for nature ..... i am a quiet man cause i know what can happen if i loose definitely the control and the reason, and cause i'm scared from that what i can do in these conditions, cause, if someone push me over this limit, where there's nothing more that i care, nothing more that i loose, there's also no limits nor exceptions to the things that i can do, literally.

And this is not applying only to me, any person have different limits and reactions levels (i'm just thinking the one that here, some months ago, got a ticket for forbidden parking, got mad, go in the car and intentionally hit the policemen that ticketed him ..... or the one that, the last year, unsatisfied from a sentence, pulled a gun and killed the judge on-the-fly) .....

So, police must also know that their goods, lives and families can be put in danger, if they pass these limits a bit too much, no matter if they carry weapons and go around in group ..... there's always a way for a payback, if one really want and don't care about his life.

I agree. I was just making a general statement for the average public.

John, the cops in your town are a prime example LOL :undecided:

This is what I really meant to say, just get tired of people telling me, "That's not true. Cops have to obey the law. They can't do things like that."

Im not sure if you live in Nigeria or some other backwards nation, but the police can not do whatever they want. They must abide by the same laws they are paid to uphold. If an officer breaks the law, he is charged just like you are. Its just that when you are in a court, the judge will always take the word of the officer over yours because the officer is a 'trained professional' and you arent. A laywer is considered a 'trained professional,' which is why you hire one to represent you. If you go to court for running a red light and the cop did not have a dash cam that recorded you doing this, it doesnt matter what you say. The officer says, "he ran the light," so you ran the light, period. However, if you have your own concrete evidence of you not doing this (or a lawyer), that changes.

Not too long ago, I was outside working on my bike and heard a 4 second long screech of tires, a huge crash, and constant blaring of a horn (from someone resting against it). I hop on and fly up the street to find an SUV overturned in the middle of the road, and a police cruiser wrapped around a tree. The officer was going 77mph in a 35mph residential zone with no lights, sirens or anything on, and he was not responding to a call. He had 2 civilians in the back that he was taking to see the magistrate, and apparently to him, that means he can drive like a maniac through my neighborhood. He was charged with the speeding, careless and wreckless, etc.. Just because you have a badge doesnt mean you can do whatever you want.

Remember to cover your @$$.

I think Tech was talkin 'bout the Jersey rules: Cops shoot first and ask questions last

My wife was from Jersey and this is where I draw my resource from. Then again
she says rarely the cops are used cause of of the combination of respect and street justice.

In that case, you would be breaking laws by shining your laser into the sky, as we all probably know. However, shining it at a tree or on the ground....? Hard to imagine on what charge you could be busted for doing that, but you really never know.

As for the police, some of what I've heard is true and other things are not. It's true that the police are legally to be held accountable if they break laws (other than things that they have the authority to do, like go thru red lights if they are responding to a call and of course openly carry firearms); however, police do tend to cover for each other. I have had several family members working for various police forces, including an uncle and my biological father. In that sense it's true that cops do get away with some things that other people probably would not get away with. If two cops decide to beat up on a suspect, they can both deny that it happened (it's also very hard to get them to rat one of their own out) and say the suspect fell and hit his head, and they may not get caught unless there's strong evidence that they just can't cover up. It's unfortunate, but this sort of thing does happen.
Most cops I think are decent and fair, but there are always a few bad apples out there that truly make hell for some people. We've all seen videos of cops doing such things, but you'd think they would remember that they are being filmed!
