Hey! Thats a really cool looking first build! I really like that host! Knurling has always appealed to me. How hard was it to mill hexagonal shaped brass?

Looking good! You really went full DIY making your own heat sink, looks great for your first one! My first one was rubbish

Do you have a setscrew in that heat sink or are you doing to hold it in with thermal adhesive?

I got the brass hexagonal and turned it. Was easy. Had hicups at first but trip down maplins sorted that.

Thanks and thats a Good question. I think a setscrew will be better. Whats your opinion?

That is a nice job on the first sink with your lathe. You should make a setscrew for your sink. That will hold the module better and it is easier to remove if you want to try something else.

Thats what i thought. I plan for the module to be a tight fit anyway

Any idea where to buy the set screws?

They are a pain to find. I had to order them online from a US store and pick it up across the border because I couldn't find in hardware stores or in any online place that shipped to Canada.

Don't forget the matching drill bit size & tap.

Edit: They are also commonly called grub screws.

Found some on ebay.

I have 2mm 2.25mm 2.90mm drill bits

I think il go with 2mm. Does anyone know what size tap il need?
Is it 2.25mm tap?
Does that mean the grum screw needs to be 2.25?

What size does everyone else use?

Thats a gd idea blord. I may just do that

I have a bucket load of old pc screws bolts and bits.

What sizes does the hole need to be for the tap to work and fit a 2mm grub screw?

Thanks

Why don't you make the screws yourself ? Take a M3 screw, cut it to the right length and make a incision on the top.

Ha, why didn't I think of that  I could've avoided that trip to the USA.

@Richard

Generally the size drill bit you need for taps are not standard sizes. Pick a grub screw size, find the thread measurement then buy a tap and a drill bit for the tap (Google up the drill bit size for your tap)
Ebay will have most common sizes.

That's what I did, but what would I know, I'm still a novice machinist :)

nice work! time to get some aluminum rounds :) i think brass is about half of what aluminum is and copper is double that of aluminum thermal conductivity wise.

Copper is better but a lot harder to work with.
The copper tends to grab the tools..

BTW.. nice job on your 1st Heatsink turned on
your recently repaired new Lathe.
