My 8X at 440mA

Re: My 8X at ???mA

Pretty much every laser I own loses power as the batteries drain and while I know this will happen more quickly with this set up I have come to accept it. I am not so concerned with this. Also it seems that the laser will lose more power as the voltage decreases initially and then after that initial voltage loss it levels out. I will have more specifics with the current as soon as someone can be nice enough to point me in the direction of a suitable DMM. Thanks guys.

Re: My 8X at ???mA

The most part of those DMM jump from 200mA to 10A (or to 20A, for the worse ones :p)

Use the 1 ohm resistor trick, if you need to measure over 200mA with a decent precision.

Edit: sorry, i forgot to explain what i mean.

Take an 1 ohm, 5 or 10 W, and a pair of pieces of wire, or old tester leads, and attach them, then attach your DMM on Volt scale in parallel with the resistor, and use the wires from the resistor as test leads ..... on 2V scale, you have a DMM that measure until 2A (1 mV for each mA, so you read them directly), with a decent precision, and without need to buy a 150$ DMM ;)

This is the one I use

29-Range Digital Multimeter - RadioShack.com

The reviews aren't stellar, but I have been using mine for several years.

Peace,

That's the exact same meter that I use, and even though it is from Rat shack, it is a good meter...

Re: My 8X at ???mA

My GF is back with the DMM. I have been measuring a lot. My 8X build by Mohrenberg is at 327mA steady as a rock with full batteries. 297mA with partially depleted batteries.
My 8X build in the MXDL host is another story. It is bouncing around all over the place. On full batteries starts steady at 388mA and then after 30 seconds or so starts bouncing around between 360-415mA. On partially depleted batteries it jumps around between 300-340mA. The MXDL laser is putting out much more power. I am not sure why the current is all over the place with the MXDL. Is it this individual driver? is it these batteries? I am charging up a different brand of RCR123A batteries to see if they make a difference.
Here is a little burning. http://img137.imageshack.us/i/img0294.mp4/

Yea, the Shack doesn't always have to best quality meters, but at least you guys are using the only one that I ever recommend to customers. (I work there) When my meter dies, I'm getting this one as well!

Yeah, They block out all of the 405nm light. When shining the laser at the glasses NO light gets through. You can only see a tiny orange dot when viewing the laser on a wall. They actually work better than the yellow ones.

I am hesitant to post an exact power measurement with the current meter I own. I am working on the situation with Laserbee.

Are we still talking about the original laser with the Rkcstr?

Peace,
dave

This makes the 6x burner I am getting look all puny only putting out just over 200mw lol, how much did it cost ya?

>400mW of violet is so hot, you MUST have a focus ring or adapter to focus it. It will burn your fingers if you try to focus with just the lens nut. :eg:

I was just "checking the focus" on one I built. I accidentally burned a streak in the buckskin of a Kachina doll at ~20 feet! I wasn't even holding it steady.

Peace,
dave
