Merged 445nm Pictures and Video Thread

Try using thin magazine paper that is black. Focus it to a pinpoint. I am doing it with ease everytime now.

Post videos once you get the heat sink material. I want to see more high powered lasers burning stuff. Good times! What is the maximum distance a 1watt laser could burn something black at?

I burned a poster across the room (~12ft) while taking a beam shot with my laser focused to infinity.
 
I just tried burning a magazine like the one in yobresal's video. It ignited pretty quickly. It also seems to depend on the thickness and type of paper the magazine uses. I've also been able to ignite candles with my 445nm laser. It's surprisingly powerful for a laser of this size.
 
What's the trick?

Do you focus it to the best burning point? Or do you have it slightly out of focus for a larger area of burning?
 
For the magazine, I focused it to a pinpoint. It helps if the paper is black on both sides. Also magazines work better than newspapers because the laser tends to punch holes in the newspaper rather than igniting it. The paper on the magazine is thicker and ignites more easily. however, igniting the magazine took me several tries and wasn't easy.

I suppose output power helps as well, but I have yet to get mine metered.
I plan on getting it tested at my professor's laser lab next week.

For the candles, they need to be pre-lit, otherwise they won't ignite under the laser. It helps to focus the dot down to a pinpoint, and position the candle upside down. This way when it lights, the flame will travel up the wick instead of burning out.

Direct driven with 4.5V, it takes 1.1A from my stabilized lab psu...
Dunno the output since i have no meter, but goddamn that looks delicious!
