Whether it kills them depends on what max current they are rated for.... If they can take 120mA then that should be OK but plain ol diodes are the most universal solution.

BluRay, you would want 6.5V or more to power the 4x (5-5.5V) with a Groove driver. The Grooves can be set from a few tens of mA to 550mA.

Ok thanks drlava, well now im using the 1N4001 diodes to drop the voltage of a 9V battery (just to test the voltage drop) but they are only dropping the voltage by .38V, .39V, and .4V. is that normal? because I thought they each drop it .7V each.

yeah at low currents they only drop .39 or so, at high currents they drop more. How are you measuring them?

got it in the mail a couple days ago... too bad the diode i pulled from my dilda lazor isn't working right....


nifty thing though, takes a half dead cr2 (2.8v) and turns it into 6.66v  :D

speaking of cr2's... if you manage to find a tube that fits cr2's you might be able to cut the corners and make it fit flat in it (for a super short laser pointer?)

ok im mesuring them like this.
first I measured the battery witch is 9.05V

Then I measured the battery with the diode in series witch was 8.65V.
9.05 - 8.65 =0.4V drop. I don't think 9V batteries give much current so its probably correct. I just wanted to make sure it was dropping voltage right.

aha, it's not that the 9V doesn't give much current, in this case it's that your multimeter doesn't DRAW much current to make a measurement. Put a 1k resistor across the multimeter probes in your above diagram and try again.

Can i use this driver with a blue laser diode from a HD-DVD drive, with 2xCR2?
Or is 2x3=6 Volt not enough?

And what one should i buy exactly? Adjustable voltage? Preset? How many mA?

That is TOO MUCH voltage.  

The flexdrive is a "boost" drive.  It takes lower voltage and boosts it up to what is needed.  You must keep the voltage supplied to less than 5.4 volts.  In order to use two CR2 type batteries, you would have to place a voltage limiting diode between the battery and the driver.  However, it will work fine with ONE CR2 to power a violet diode from an HD-DVD drive.  

The "blu-ray" and "HD" diodes are VIOLET not blue.  ;)

So i have to buy a Micro FlexDrive V2, or Micro FlexDrive V2 preset current? And then type in 800mAh (the CR2 battery is 800mAh according to the manufacturer)

mAh is a measure of the total amount of charge stored in the battery. They discharge the battery at a low current level until the battery reaches a "dead" state, and then multiply the hours and the discharge rate to determine the battery's capacity. If you go for the preset current, you need to decide how much current your diode will recieve (which should probably be around 100 mA), which will be about 40% less than the current draw from your battery (e.g it could run for 4-5 hours on a single battery).

Hi Dave,

I bought a new Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive and extracted the whole laser compartment myself, and then i just snapped out the diode (am i crazy, or are there TWO diodes in a X360 HD-DVD drive?). So i dont know what the recommended current is for that.

You are not crazy.  One of the diodes is the violet diode.  The other is the combination red and IR diode.  The violet diode is the one with only three pins in the back.  The red/IR has four pins.

The XBOX 360 HD DVD player used two different violet diodes.  Do you still have or do you recall the number on the sled? (PHR-803T or DT-0811)?  Have you removed the diode from the heat sink yet?  Have you removed the ribbon cable/PCB off of the pins yet?

Hi,

I still got everything, didnt throw anything away :)
Right now i have the full sled, with 2 diodes in it, havent taken them out yet.

It says DT-0811 on a small white sticker. This isnt good news right, this one is worse than the 803T? :'(

you can still get a decent amount of power out of it though ;) also it will look brighter than a 803t

i shot you a PM about ordering one with the diode so i can run it off of 2 cr123a's but recieved no response
