no I didn't take that picture. I just snagged it quick off the net. To be honest I've had chameleons as pets, an iguana, but not yet a gecko. (It would be bad to have one around our dogs. besides my other half hates reptiles.) However, sooner or later, a gecko is most definitely on the list of critters to own.
As for ANY reptile, how they behave depends on the environment you raise them in. You want to get them young. If they become accustomed to you, and the environment you place them in, then you can very much let them run around a bit. However certain problems like small children, dogs, or cats, tend to be a little hard on lizards. Pictures like this one here are the exception when it comes to pet lizards and dogs.
