I am a little surprised to hear you say that the dot from a 1 watt (of any color) isn't "instantly blinding." I just got a 150mw green and I find the dot to be intolerably bright. Even looking at it for short bursts i can "feel" how bright it is. More than five times that, I can imaginer even a fleeting glance to be scary.

You're sure it's really a watt? Maybe you have a different definition of "bright" than the rest of us

In any case, just think of this whole issue this way: you really don't want to find out one day that everyone else here was right.

Its ok, Rayfoss aint a ton more and its quicker and its not a GB. Probably not 1W but somewhere close. I don't look at the dot indoors and if I do I know where I am pointing it. There is almost nothing reflective in my house, there is only 2 mirrors in my house. Yeah the light is bright as tits but its not "Instantly blinding"

My house has shiny windows and shiny light switch covers..
I even have shiny plates... cups glasses and Vases...
Not to mention.. an older CRT TV with a shiny screen...

Actually All my plates are porcelain, All carpet and tiles, Wood clock wood table fica counters. Glasses are in the wood cupboards.

Just so you know, Toaster, the effects on your vision you describe tell me that your eyes are quite possibly sustaining some damage.

I would disagree with you when you say ~1W of 445nm laser light isn't that bright. However, it isn't that bright compared to a green of equivalent power. That does not mean it is less dangerous.
The effect on your eyes, however, is worse than that of a longer wavelength laser. I'm sure you've heard of the "blue light hazard" (about which WL spread all kinds of misinformation).

Persisting after-images and faulty color perception are not good signs.

I consider myself to be "safe" with lasers and have not sustained any damage (that I know of) in a few years of fiddling with Class IIIb and IV lasers.
However, I know when I am at risk and I make sure to use goggles when:

• Testing a powerful laser on an LPM (to center the beam on the sensor).
• Putting anything into the beam path.
• Operating a Class IV laser of any wavelength indoors or in a confined space.

Does this subtract from the enjoyment of lasers?
Does it defeat the purpose of having a cool beam of light?
Not really. I have lower power lasers and a fog machine for indoor and casual use.

There really is no point in trying to argue this, Toaster.
A Class IV laser will deteriorate your eyesight via thermal or photochemical damage whether you like it or not.

Just because you haven't caught a reflection, it doesn't mean damage is not occurring. Apply your safe practices to a 5mW laser and you will be just fine, but 1W of 445nm laser light is 1W of 445nm laser light. There's no way to get around it.

Yeah I am not saying they aren't a good idea because I know they are. I just think the need isn't always NEEDED unless you plan on starring straight at it.

Hey so first of all, this is an opinion, so hear me out. I have just freshly built a 445 running at 1A so I am assuming ~1w. So The first time I fired it up, it was at night about 100 feet. Wasn't nearly as bright as all the people said. It has a nice beam and a nice dot. On the wall inside, it was still not that bright up close, the dot was still not bright.

All of this without goggles. Not a hint of spots. A small amount of retinal overload (Yellow/orange spots) some after image (Blue Spots). No black spots though. And this was ~1W at a white wall. Even burning has the same effects. Now I might be crazy here but how come people are so afraid to look at a dot? It honestly seems like looking at the focus of the sun through a magnifying glass.

I am extremely cautious of looking into the beam and never have and never will. But the goggles, I have never understood.

You cannot look at a 1 Watt spot whilst burning. I do not believe your laser is anywhere near 1 Watt. Can you link to a review of it or give us some details about how you know it is 1W?

What's wrong with a GB? Rayfoss don't care if you have goggles or not. I happen to care and this is why I mentioned it in the PM I sent you. I even commented on your improved contributions but it appears I was too hasty in believing you'd moved forward.

Nope, but then again, the diode from a Lite-On, 12x Bluray sled isn't a 1W diode and doesn't claim to be. You may get it close but it'll burn out real quick. Maybe you backed out of the GB when I told you there was no gaurantee and that if you break it, it's the only one you'll get? I'm glad you did but then again I was surprised to see your interest anyway.
