Just witnessed this on TV here in Korea

Well as I explained, I've been living here for now +4 yrs.
I have NO problem with respect your elders,stuff.
Problem here is that confucianism is taken to the ninth degree.
As such it makes for a great deal of poor communication skills and
Social skills. Socialization at school here is virtually non existent, and
what social skills are taught are that "competition" is everything.
You combine this with the attitude that if a person is older
They have a right to treat you like garbage routine,
Some of the worst immature outbursts I have ever seen happen ONLY in Korea.
Societies norms are reflected in classroom behaviour.
What I witnessed here in public school shows me how
defunct the societal model is.

Equivalent.

I'm no expert but I would think South Korea is much more civilized in the anti women abuse department then China, almost all of the middle east, and pretty much most parts of Africa.

Lol, yes I totally agree on that one.
Korea still is better than those places.
 
Its always the exceptional cases that make it into the media, online or not. I don't think its fair to judge any society on a couple of videos of really bad situations that manage to capture international attention.

I suppose most people that smoke in the korean subway just get a fine like anywhere else, not their head bashed into a window repeatedly.

@ those vid, it serves these cowards right, when they assault and go to jail and then get rapped by dudes in there...then they are treated like piece of meat the whole time they are in there.

I think the degree to which the older man got physical was excessive, but if someone makes threatening moves against you it is time to get physical. He should not have had any problem grabbing her hand and breaking a few fingers (at worst) judging by how easily he tosser her. Lex Talionis, not beat the shit out of someone because you can.

Probably not the reaction you're looking for, but IMO the drunk, smoking, vulgar, woman got exactly what she deserved. Note he tried to walk away from her, and she backed off to grab her shoe, and came at him again.

As soon as she came at him with a weapon, IMO any amount of force was justifiable, up to and including lethal force.

There is actually quite a bit of a debate going on in the US right now about "Stand Your Ground" or as some prefer, the "Make My Day" laws. The essence of which boils down to precisely this:

If someone comes attacks you, you are permitted to defend yourself with lethal force and protected from criminal as well as civil liability after.

Personally I'm all for it.

Regarding this instance specifically I also feel quite a bit of sympathy for the guy. Obviously nothing escalated like this, but I've been on subways where some moron would start smoking. Whether someone is drinking or not really doesn't bother me. What really irks me are the people who get on a quiet train car, but insist on yelling into their cellphone.

Maybe if people were a bit more afraid of each other, rather than just the police, we'd have a more polite society.

Mental patients are just that, mental. They should be restrained, not beaten. Not that I haven't wanted to beat my share of psych patients. On top of that, the woman is obviously not much of a threat to that man. The force used was WAY out of line.

I restrained a psych patient about 2 weeks ago who thought he could get up off the cot. He unbuckled the cot's seat belts and raised his fists at me and the fight was on. I never struck him (because he was in his 50s and missing a leg) but he was on his back next to the cot within a few seconds.

If this were two men I could totally understand throwing fists as it comes down to keeping yourself out of danger, but this woman is no match for a grown man.

He should of restrained the woman, and called the police.

The only thing that makes me more angry than the guy blatantly abusing the woman, are the cowards who aren't doing anything about it.

I believe in the right to self defense or the use of deadly force if your life is genuinely being threatened. However with the stand your ground laws it seems if someone claims he killed someone in self defense and there are no witnesses it's really just the shooters word vs. the dead mans. If there are no witnesses to what happened and there is barely an investigation because the shooter claimed self defense then it seems this is a very easily abuse-able law.

What if someone wanted to plan to kill someone and then did. He could simply make up a story saying that he went over to the person's house and felt threatened by some gesture or behavior and if there are no witnesses or other evidence it is again left to taking the word of the shooter. If the definition of a threat can be defined and interpreted by the shooter without any witnesses to weigh in on if the threat was justified, then it is just ripe for abuse where anyone with various mental states, quickness to draw conclusions about people, an itchy trigger finger, or possibly even a desire to kill a specific person can say HE felt threatened even if the threat is not legitimate or justified.

At the very least there should be a trial to weigh if the threat was truly justified, otherwise it's just the wild wild west all over again. And that's not a place I would want to live in in this day and age.

However if there is legitimate use of deadly force as in protecting yourself in a violent home invasion where your life and your family were truly threatened, then you should not go to prison for something like this, and it is wrong for people to be punished in this instance if what they did was necessary for saving their own lives or their family members. It can be difficult to distinguish justifiable cause, but this is why it it should always go to court and not left to the shooters word as it seems the stand your ground law allows for some of these cases to not even go to trial.
