Illegal? Multiple laser pointer bundled weapon

I can't get a straight answer on this with Google or by searching this site, so here goes.

I want to take ten (or so) $1 eBay laser pointers (probably less than 5mW, the cheapest I can find), bundle them into a round package, wire all the battery terminals to a switch+battery for a hand-held, inexpensive dazzler, for self-defense. Shine into the eyes of a bad guy for a perfectly non-harmful scare weapon.

The lasers won't be aimed onto one spot, so the power won't be multiplied; on the contrary, I'd like a wider spread so I don't have to aim very carefully (adrenaline and all). Wide like a shotgun. Maybe a foot wide/roughly 0.3 meters wide at ten feet, roughly three meters?

I know that people are deathly afraid of going blind, and hardly anyone out there, especially dumb criminals, knows that cheap laser pointers don't permanently blind you. I'd never point it at a cop or the innocent, just a criminal, just to scare them.

Here's the question: Can you think of any reason this might be illegal? I live in Florida, USA.

If this has already been discussed please point me in the right direction. No pun indented, or intended.
 





OK those threads said it's not a good idea (thanks, probably best to put a laser sight on a shotgun) but said nothing about whether a bundle of pointers is legal. No wonder I couldn't find it by searching.

Anyone?
 
Illegal? Probably not. Stupid? Definitely yes.

You know what's going to be funny? When you think to "dazzle" some criminal, and make some sudden motion to grab your lame "dazzler"--it fails, and that criminal is either spooked or enraged by your feeble attempt and uses a real weapon to cause you grievous injury. Oh wait, that won't be funny, and would be in fact stupid on your part.

If you're going carry something for self-defense, make sure you're carrying something that isn't going to feature you in the Darwin awards. That mean either something that has real threatening/lethal value--such as a fire arm--or nothing at all so that the criminal doesn't react in a potentially harmful manner.

Or when your cheap 5mW pointer really ends up being 80mW and you blind them then they sue you.
 
Why not buying those ultra bright XML flash lights. Completely legal.
 
What is it lately with people wanting a laser to use for self defense?
 
It reminds me of of a story my friend was telling me when I was a kid when some stooge kid was threatening him with a plastic sword.

"He swung it at me and when it hit me it bent! So I went "MUHAHAHAHA!!!" and chased him all the way back home as he screamed!"

That laser dazzler is the bent plastic sword.
 
it is not illegal to bundle laser pointers,but if you somehow manage to injure somebody with it i am sure you will at least face an assault charge.most likely your "dazzler" will be useless and will not be effective on any level.
 
What if your target fires at random after being "dazzeled"? I mean if your nutty enough to draw a weapon with intent why wouldn't they fire?

How are you even get these mass of pointers out safely or even turn them all on at once?

Too dangerous and to many flaws besides if its legal or not.
 
I don't know what all the poop is about.

The guy is contemplating using a non-lethal device to defend himself. There are plenty of physical and chemical agents that have potential long term damage. One that comes to mind is tasers, which have been studied to death, literally.

I would suspect, that similiar to audible crowd control concepts, this one is currently being evaluated.

So the guy comes to one of the most learned forums to get feedback and be educated. Good for him.

All that being said, I prefer a lethal alternative. If you are in a fight for your life, it better be lethal or I am not fighting for my life.

Well the point is that it wouldn't be effective, and would most likely result in him being hurt. Was a valid question to ask, and here are the answers as postulated by our members.
