hi, I got my red laser burned. Can somebody help please ? I need to know if it is the diode.

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

you sir have a nice host now  ;D
more than likely you fried your pump diode cr123a's are putting 4.2 volts each
so you put in 8.4 volts in somthing that required 3.6-4.2 = disaster

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

Was it running as a flashlight or as a laser at the time?
If it was in laser mode, then the laser is for sure fried, if it called for an 18650 cell, then it's made to run on 3.7V to 4.1V. Putting 2 cr123 cells which are rated at 3V to 3.2V or so, basically doubled the voltage. If it doesn't fry the laser diode in the 1st few seconds, then it will have an extremely shortened lifespan, instead of like several thousand hours, it's reduced to maybe several hours at best. Even doing it just one time, will weaken it by a huge factor.

Try going back to the correct battery and testing it in laser mode, to see; if it was in flashlight mode, then you have a chance it didn't fry the laser diode.

They will be able to tell it was overvoltaged if they take the time to do root cause failure analysis on it (which they will probably do if it has that burnt circuit board smell like the magic smoke was let out of the device.

An expensive lesson to learn.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt, didn't like it, & threw it ALL away!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

what if I replace the diode I just fried?

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

Most likely you fried the driver. Possibly the diode, too, but the driver is what absorbs most of the over-voltage. Replacing the diode will not fix the problem if the driver is burnt.

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

My guess is the driver is ok but the diode is a DONE DEAL. Dead. for sure.

On a laser from DX the diode is running either at or damn near it's rated power. When you try to go higher it dies. This is why they are cheap. Cheap components to make some halfway decent power for a few Hours.

If you get a high quality laser from CNI or viasho, they usually have a big pump running at HALF of it's rated power. This is because they are guaranteeing that the laser will work for X amount of time. These are the cases in which you can add some power, but it is still a risky move if you dont know what you're doing. Also, the rated lifespan is a few thousand hours. On cheap pointer they don't really give you a rated lifespan.

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

That was dishonest. You fried the parts, and you're trying to get them to give you something free in return?

If I took a hammer to my goggles, would it be okay for me to ask thesk8nmidget (LPF user) to replace them? I don't think so. That's just not right.

Re: Please HELP! 200mW green laser

Wouldn't it be funny if they read this thread and refused him a replacement  ::)

Actually, I think I'll buy some lunchables today, eat them, and return them saying they were empty when I bought them. And if hell froze over and that worked, I'm sure I would feel reeeeeeeal great about myself... :-X

They won't need to see this, one look at the driver will tell them all they need to know.

It has been said many times but I will try again....

Some gain in power may be seen by uping the voltage from 3v to 3.6v on a 5mw laser as they are the inefficient ones. When you get a higher mw green it is, most likely. being driven as hard as is safe..... any extra voltage will just kill it.... but you know that now....

......i could argue that......
how was he even able to hook two batteries to it? did they fit inside?

thats part of selling a product.....people do stupid crap all the time....and want you to fix it....besides.......they are still coming out with a profit even sending him a 2nd for free.......

Re: Please HELP! 150mW green laser

as I posted on your reputation chart, it's really dishonest to fry your laser and ask for RMA. That only makes them to think we all want to ripp them off. Go away please
