Hurricane Harvey

Yes, this is very true. I just hope everyone is going to be ok.

Luckily it didn't sustain as a Cat 3 or 4, so the winds should be starting to become more reasonable. Hopefully this is the last day it's a hurricane. Looks like heavy rain is going to last a few days though. Flash flood warnings were put out until Wednesday.

Well the wind part is good news. That lessons the chances of storm surges. As for the rainfall. Only time will tell.

The problem is the storm surge. You can get a wall of water 20 feet high and near the coast, little is above that or can withstand the power of it. I went out after Camille in 1969 and 1 mile from the beach was totally destroyed. I90 which ran along the coast was gone and there was an oil tanker ship half a mile inland. Power and water were off for a month. We moved to my mother's sister's vacation cabin in Louisiana to wait for services to be restored. I have many more stories like this one, but the take away is evacuation is the best almost always the best option.

sorry for not posting earlier..
so far..only a big rain event for my immediate area ..AS said the San Bernard River handles storm surge better than most.. it is way high now--150 miles north.
but across the street the boat dock is not covered with water ..(not a floating dock)
it was getting light when I laid it down.. .
woke once at 7 am==all is well-then slept hard till 3PM.. looks fine from all my windows.

Past storms and future IMO are not interconnected.. its close to a science now.. but there afaik still a lot of hunches/guesses etc..just getting my outdoor stuff squared away I was winded. I am supposed to always have a cane in one hand.. mostly as a way to prevent falls.. ahhh I try but both hands are often needed and I try to maintain balance and slow down.. I have fallen but catch myself or tucknroll-- so none that caused lasting injury... no fool am I-- that this may not get a lot worse fast but going away ..nope... lost a dozen canes..so far.

I was uneasy not having the Weather Channel..no air broadcast here.. & the net was slow to load radar sites...
ONE

'No Alerts in Your Area (I gave zip) then 'Enjoy your day' ==and getting that took 10 min.

later it change to red background screen with BOLD red ALERT!!..

I was thankful that so few lives were lost--one lady in house fire...
and seeing neighbors on TV helping any and all.. covering open roofs- and this storm is not over..

TY to all who voiced concern for me... you all are the best..

V/R

Take care, you old fart. Don't want to hear you broke your hip. That tuck and roll won't work well with brittle bones.

You're welcome for the concern Len. :)
I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself.
And stay cautious. I hope you've seen the worst of it now.

pure luck that I was , so far, right to stay.
dock across the street is underwater and the neighbor I said I could impose on should my roof go bye bye...??
they split and left the dogs in charge..

Harvey is squatting in about the same spot for hours and the outer bands around me are skipping my area.

The weather crew on Local TV are getting dingy from sleep dep.. The night shift never made it so....
The keep forgetting to turn on their mics.. and tend to ramble on--no other TV shows on this NBC channel but Harvey. for iirc 24 hours_+ do not think they can carry on like this for two more days..
its a weather marathon .
some heavy rain came and went
gusty winds and drizzle ATM

Yep, we need a safety check!
Hopefully you've (and your roof) made it through the worst of this one. :yh:

I am anxiously waiting for news from you, Hak. I really do hope you came out of this with little damage and in good health. Take care, buddy.

Please keep us updated Len, as with everyone else here I am desperately hoping for the best!

Wow. That degree of flooding seems unreal in a city as big as Houston. Really hope most people are okay and the city can recover well. How are you Len?

The hurricane's immediate damage is ridiculous in some of the more coastal communities as well.

I lived in Houston for awhile. it is about as flat as any place can be. If it floods, I imagine the whole city is affected. That's a whole lotta water.
