How many diodes have you killed?

Just out of curiosity I was wondering how many diodes you go through? Ive killed 2 S06Js on one build that apperently doesnt want to be a laser. Please make me feel better and tell me this is normal haha. One day I will figure this out and be able to show you a successful build!

Maybe you should be asking how much did all the
LDs you blew cost you...

2 years ago we blew one (1) Laser Diode that cost
us ~$350.00...

That's besides all the $$ we spent blowing LDs in the
Laser Build/Use learning curve.

One M140
One A140
Two 12x's (Still don't have a 405nm laser over 100mW)
One single mose 638nm
10 or so 5.6mm pump diodes
One IR cmount diode
Two LPC-826's

I think that's it. My driver graveyard is much more expansive.

Nice topic. :)

I will take a picture of my diode dump. I have saved every diode I killed. The diodes are gold plated and if you have enough of them you can start harvesting the gold out of it. :)

One M140 (although I think it was a dud)
One cheapo 200mW 650nm from eBay
One 650nm module from DTR
SIX LPC-826's!

I only ever got one working diode in a host........ so one of my relatives broke it for me  I also keep all my diodes, will post a picture later!

One single mose 638nm

I believe I have never heard of a single mose 638! Is it a special diode ARGLaser?

Nice topic OP!

My first was the best a Mits 500...:cryyy:

1 x Mits 500 - Think I shorted the gnd with the case (heatsink) on a modified AMC driver - AMC's reg through neg not pos...:tinfoil:
1 x M140 - Although I think it was more of a dodgy diode...very odd???
1 x lazeerer 3.8 mm dual red - IR side still worked. Built an IR laser instead, so it probably doesnt count...;)

Total: $135

Not many to be honest.

I've had quite a few that have died or degraded due to old age , but I've only "killed" a few.

Ok, so, I am going to leave out the crappy pens we've all killed due to their surely poor craftsmanship.

I feel much better about my body count!
1 M-140-overvolt because I didn't properly solder my LD connections
1 M-140-overvolt? This one was killed by an older Benboost that I accidentally dislodged an IC on with my soldering iron. Whatever it did to the diode, it didn't like it...

My living list currently includes 1 405nm S06J, 1 445nm M-140, 1 650nm BDR, 1 50mw 532nm module.

Speedy, that's a real shame about those S06Js! Those things are expensive to keep killing! I feel for you. I had a scare and thought I LEDd my S06J. I am so glad it lives.

Okay, here is the picture. Most are IR and 445nm diodes. Couple of 12x BR, Mitsu 500 and LPC8xx. Some 9mm 445nm on the front...

Holy diode mass grave, Blord!

What is the estimated value of all those?

What diode would cost that much... ??

What diode would cost that much... ??

There was a time when we had to buy a $360 bluray burner to be able to harvest the single 6X diode from the sled in it
Now we did get the bonus of a 250mW red diode as well, but that was not the focus
However, we were willing because that was the ONLY source for them at the time

Besides, we were getting 200mW of violet light from them!
It was never going to get any better than that, was it

The bare diode market that we all enjoy now is the direct result of the early "pioneers" in the hand held (pointer) hobby searching for less expensive ways to get diodes
It was a "cottage industry" that grew in China to satisfy our desires

Peace,
dave

This reminds me of why I had a 3 yr hiatus from the forum...It was a WAY to expensive hobby for me back then.

No doubt
The first laser I bought, that was built by someone here, was a 6X in a Kryton Smooth.
It was made by Dr Lava.
IIRC it was putting out just under 200mW.
It cost me $600 :tinfoil:

We've gotten a bit better since those days

Peace,
dave
