Holy @#$%... $100 488nm diode!!

A lot more expensive diodes than this used to be tested out from people donating to see how a diode performed. Sometimes the testing was stopped before death and then luck of the draw as to who got to keep the diode from what I remember. I don't like when any diode dies regardless of price but it's what can happen during testing so you have to be ready to live with that.
The real main point I was making and miss is the shared load aproach so one person doesn't take all the financial loss and it brings the forum together. If the diodes are legit then maybe it's going to have to be random for whoever has the $ on hand but that's up to J as he owns them. Regardless I would figure that the finder deserves one more than anyone else. A big question is if they are legit can he get more.
As far as drivers go if they really need a boost driver I don't know anyone who has them or you can just build with 12V with the appropriate buck taking into account any wiring or isolation needed if they are case negative as J mentions.
There's a lot of things that don't add up to these being legit so I'm not allowing myself to be more on the positive side just so the dissapointment isn't as bad. If they are actually legit then hopefully he can order more in a larger quantity and get them quicker to satisfy everyone although I know it's not possible to literally satisfy everyone. There's always something to complain about;)

There is zero reason to test these until they fail if we don't have a steady supply of them. It would just be throwing the diode away, since the information wont be relevant if we can't have more of the same diodes.
Stick to what the data sheet recommends.

So you'd be content without the knowledge of what these diodes are capable of? Correct me if I'm wrong but some diodes are just fine at more than triple their recommended output so long as a duty cycle is implemented. I say push one to the edge and over for science and research :) but hey its not my decision to make either.

It's like you didn't read what I just said. If we don't get more of these, then that information wont matter. You just wasted diode that many of us would rather have.

While I agree with the sentiment of fully testing one which I will but what diodes are you seeing that can do more than triple rated current? I would say most of the new generation multimode diodes which are well underrated to get to that very high 20K hour rating to match the LED's that they were hoping to replace since they are marketed for display use. Seems single mode diodes from earlier generations rated for a more standard 5K hours give a more realistic recommended max. I think saying 1.5X rated current for most of the higher power multimode diodes is a better average.

Yes I think 3x was a bit of a hyperbole, but I was making the point that I would much rather run my diode at a higher current from the testing of one diode rather than settling for the manufacturers specification even if we never get any more (which i doubt, because I may purchase a shipment as well)

At least compare the threshold current with the datasheet, as well as the forward voltage.
That way you should be able to tell if it is a match, and then have better idea of what to expect from the graphs when pushing it beyond it's rating.

We always get good test data that J shares. I don't see what the issue is here and why it seems to be turning into an argument. I was making a point t about how we used to have people share the expense of testing diodes so it wouldn't be all on one person if the diode blows. As DTR said that data may not be correct. I've seen diodes be fine one moment and blow the next totally unexpected so there's a risk involved. There is always a risk. Sometimes in the testing it blows while other time the tester stopped the test before it blew or where he knew from experience the point at which it would very likely blow. I can't be the only one who remembers this. In this particular case DTR is taking all the risk although I suspect if it blows he will raise the price of the rest to cover it which is certainly fair.
Looking at the site the diodes are listed and you can ask for a quote. No one is stopping anyone else from buying as many as they want. Its exciting to get a new diode available and nice for the forum but we don't need any more division here. This is not dogs and cats sleeping together.

Might be a mute point. Customs did not clear them with the submitted documents and are sending them to the FDA for review. This is another process. It could be quick like 3-5 days for them to decide to clear, seize or refuse but if anyone remembers Yobresal and a package he had forwarded to the FDA for review, it was just under two years later a package showed up on his door saying they finally cleared it. That is the worst case I have ever heard of but I am getting a bad vibe here.:(

I'm sorry to hear that Jordan! I'm still hopeful that it'll work out but starting to jump on the not-gonna-happen bandwagon unfortunately. I'm more curious about what the hell they are than trying to get my hands on one ASAP, I would rather have tests done before start playing around blow an expensive diode like that!

And this is one of the reasons why Jordan should be appreciated more because he takes a lot of risks. I am NOT brown nosing here. I've bought a LOT of stuff over the years from him and he would attest to that I'm sure. There have been a few issues that came up mainly having to do with me having to have to ask questions either because the information wasn't readily available or because I was thinking the wrong thing and yes a few mistakes in what I ordered but considering how much stuff I've gotten and it's just him it's very reasonable not to mention the inexpensive and fast shipping almost always either mailed same day or next with tracking.
Sometimes I do buy from others but it isn't very often. The second to last diode I ordered from someone here was never sent, got a PM saying it was going to be sent and then nothing. Don't know if that person will ever show up here again or.not but I don't think I'm the only one that it happened to. All I can say is I hope things are OK with him as I know something seemed off but I always consider it a risk ordering from others while I don't think about it when I order from J. Just ordered some stuff yesterday for a special build a friend here asked for help with.
If what happened to Yo happens to you does that mean you are out your $?

No delivery then paypal should take care of it with their coverage.

Why did they send them to the FDA? It is neither a food nor a drug, this is stupid on customs behalf if you ask me.
