Hit in eye with 1000mw 445nm blue laser

I just read this whole thing... WOW!
.. I ordered a nicer pair of goggles to replace my old ones like 2 pages in!

The last part of the video was clearly shot in a SIMULATOR and is therefore FAKE - there is no way that beam would be so tightly focused at such a range.

I really hate it when they throw fake garbage like that into an otherwise informative video.

I stopped taking it seriously at "my aviation teacher".

Respectfully, an aviation teacher is not going to be impartial on the subject.
 
Just so everyone is aware, the fundraiser is over. I really appreciate everyone who helped contribute, but because I did not raise the necessary funds, and because of some concerns raised with the clinic I was seeking, I will not be pursuing the procedure. I have sent emails through the GiveForward system to the donors to notify them of this decision, and offer refunds.

Again, I do greatly appreciate everyone who was involved! It's wonderful to see that random strangers were willing to donate just so a fool like me can attempt to recover vision I lost due to my own mistake.

How have you been fairing with your current vision?

Pretty much still the same. The blind spot doesn't seem to be getting any bigger, at least.

And the avatar doesn't bother me lol :p
 
I don't have anything physically wrong with my eyes, but I know what it is to have a huge blind spot. Every now and then I get a optical migraine (no pain, just symptom) where half of my vision disappears in my right eye. All I can see when this happens is a gray patch, it lasts a couple of minutes and then dissolves away quickly.

That doesn't sound very normal .. while I don't recognize the symptoms, I hope you had it checked by professionals.

This is very common, especially with people who experience migraines but not only.
The difference is the type of "blind spot" caused by a laser injury can result in a large "black spot" in your field of vision which never goes away.
 
As someone who is having eye surgery next week (unrelated issue not laser) it is a fear of mine I'll burn my retina out a day after my eye is fixed haha. Hope you can get fixed up buddy.

Good luck with the surgery. It's nothing to worry about though. You'll be given a pair of very dark goggles to wear outside for a while, and will look like a septuagenarian for a while, but there's no getting around that.
 
This is why I object to any goggles that may be under rated. An accident like this can happen with the goggles on as well. I figure if you arn't using OD6+ glasses, with a 5+ watt in particular, you are making a mistake. The reflections of this laser are seriously brutal and will burn your eyes out over time. I don't buy OD4+ or less rating because I don't believe the rating. Watch what you are buying in goggles. Better too much, than too little. Take care that some unscrupulous dealer doesn't sell you a pair of goggles that are less than what you need for the wavelength and power level you are using. The guy at Phillips Safety, who supposedly KNOWS laser goggles, told me a pair of THEIR goggles would not stop a direct strike, that a direct strike should be avoided, and provide only 1/4 second protection at 100 feet, and 10 seconds protection at 1000 feet against a 5 watt laser..
