It would be very hard to replicate properly though... You need extremely stable conditions and a totally clean environment.

If anyone has access to a cleanroom, maybe they can start making crystals on the side. :D
 
Very cool article. I'm amazed he was able to get green photons from a home-grown, uncut and uncoated crystal.
 
hell yeah. can it be that the diy laser scene makes more progress this year than ever bevore? laser tv beamers, ubercheap gb's, special ar lenses, cristal growing...

Now given that, I have the same chemical at home! I just may have to try and grow some crystals...just for shits and giggles.

Now, does it require a special laser to excite the crystals? Certain wavelength, power, anything?

Love to just make crystals that have a florescence under laser excitement. Anyone knowledgeable enough here that can help break this down for the laymen....or someone who half-ways understands this article?
 
So, basically you need just KH2PO4 (CAS 7778-77-0)
I can get this from our biggest Chem supplier for as low as 20€ per kg

And he says industry adds EDTA (60-00-4) and KCl (7447-40-7) which i can get too

So when i make my giant order (to supply my Provigil synthesis project :D) i can maybe put this in and give it a shot...



btw: can Nd:YAG can be pumped with IR Cree's ?
 
I would probably try this, - as I already used to grow crystals of basic compounds and I've made some realy clear crystals - but The only problem is I don't have the compound he talks about. I'll see if I can find some.

Well. From what I know, it is related to the optical properties of the crystal. Essentially the crystal is "frequency doubling" (or wavelength splitting). So you put in 1064nm (wavelength) of infrared light, and the crystal splits the wavelength to 532nm and outputs visible green light.

Looks like the crystal has to be at a 42 degree angle.
 
It is very cool... but one thing to keep in mind: To do this, you will need a pulsed, high powered pump laser. None of this is likely to work using a CW 1064 at any power level.

The doubling process is nonlinear, and with these crystals probably very inefficient. The only way to get enough power to make it happen without blasting the crystal to bits is pulsed operating with short, high intensity pump pulses.

I have seen this demonstrated in a similar setup with uncoated crystals just in front of the pump aperture producing faint green light, but it's a long shot to reproduce by any means.
