Make sure to use IR goggles if you do this.
IR is just as bright as everyhing else, but you can't see it, if that makes sense. In other words, imagine 200mw of green, and how painful it would be to stare at that dot. Now take that same amount of power and just imagine that your eyes can't see it and think how dangerous that could be.

yes i get it, and goggles are already on my list of things to get

so if i were to try to convert it back to IR it basically wouldn't work as is? thats aggravating

i think stonetek sells 200mw IR diodes for $9.99

Brightness is an attribute of visual perception.If you can't see it, it isn't bright. :

An IR laser is just as good to start with as a red one, as long as you have goggles(that probably have twice the price of the entire build, but if you find a deal let me know )

And as for showing it off to your friends, be careful.You shouldn't shine that around indoors where they can get tons of specular ,diffuse and even direct reflections that you can't really predict, unless everybody is wearing goggles.In other words, stealth balloon popping at a party with a 200mW IR laser, as much fun as it sounds, is a really bad idea.

Yeah, just like you can stealthily pop a balloon with IR, so to can you stealthily blind somebody (like yourself).

I suggest that since you're new to the hobby, start with something that requires less carefulness.

oh you dont have to suggest that, because that was always what i was gonna do, i just haven't been able to find the perfect project for me just yet.

lol i basically did that already, i took a module out of a laser level and but it into a small tin with a 9v batt and swtich, then i took that apart ( i needed the 9v and switch) and put the module in my parts bin

darn, i had heard on here, someone posted a thing saying that when he tried to mod his green laser he broke the aperture that made it green and now its a burning IR laser, and thats what i was hoping to do as well, except on purpose. that being said where can i buy a powerful IR laser and about how much should it cost?

That was me. ;D I drilled into the driver on accident, and now it puts out about 10mW of IR. Not enough to burn anything, but it's pretty cool to shine around with the camera.

I did that same something. Dropped my laser and the crystal set up came detached. It's a "<50mW" laser (although probably considerably less - it's from FP) and idk how much IR it puts out or whether it burns yet. I'm itching to try, but scared for my eyes.

I have tried it out now. And (mostly) repaired the laser. Couldn't get it focussed enough to burn because not being able to see it means i can't tell when it's focussed, and my phone camera doesn't want to show it either.
