oh and for measuring current on these drivers how do you go about doing it with a diodes installed?

would you just put a 1 ohm resister in line with the positive wire to the diode and measure off that?

i usually set my current with a test load and leave it at that but if im wanting to test these diodes at different currents i dont want to have to keep switching from a test load to the diode if i dont have to

If your DMM is connected up 'in-line' on the positive lead from the driver to the LD, and set for mA reading, you will be seeing the current while checking the power of your 'lit' diode...

But as you may know, if you are using a FlexDrive, the pot can be very sensitive. It's more time going back and forth, but safer.

i will be using a flexmod which has a 12 turn pot so i'll be safe..

so all i have to do is cut the wire going to the positive diode pin and have one probe on the driver side and the other probe on the other diode side?

no resistor at all?

that sounds simple enough

^For testing, have 2 outputs in parallel with switches on each parallel leg.  Have the diode leg off and turn the test load on and measure the current until it's where you want it.  Then, turn the test load leg off, and turn the diode leg on.  You can put a 1-ohm resistor in series with the whole thing as well, and you can just leave your multimeter in voltage setting all the time.  Measure the current through the test load by the voltage across the 1-ohm resistor, turn the test load off, turn the laser diode on, measure the current by checking the voltage across the resistor again (redundant, but a sanity check), and you can measure the voltage across the laser as well.  Turn the laser off, and start all over again.

Note pointed out by IgorT: Turn off the power to the driver BEFORE switching to or from the laser or the testload. The driver sould NOT be energized while changing between outputs. So turn off power to the driver, THEN switch outputs with the switches on the output side. This will keep excess energy from building up in the driver and dumping it into the diode. Also, with the Flexdrive, you should never power it without a load connected, so that should remind you to de-energize the driver before turning an output line off.

Safer with the switches like pullbangdead shows, but to answer your question sk8, yes, that's all you need to do. Have one of your DMM probes on the driver positive output, and the other probe on the LD positive input.

Have your DMM set to measure mA's. It's really easy, but there is one thing to watch out for...

Important: If you do it this way, the one thing you have to watch out for, is turning the DMM off. Always turn off the supply power first. If you make the mistake of turning off your DMM while the supply is on, and then turn the DMM back on, you could kill the LD if you have a charged cap...

Well, i just set it to 219mA, where it did 213mW with an acrylic lens and 247mW with the glass lens. That picture i posted was the beginning of the "torture". After that i just used it a lot, measuring it often to see if it would start degrading. If the power would drop, i would re-check it with the glass lens, to eliminate the possibility of the acrylic lens aging, and then check for any differences in the treshold current (with 405nm LDs, the threshold climbs as they degrade, the slope efficiency remains the same).

At that point, i was expecting these to be the same, so i was pushing my 6x to 220mA, so that i would feel safer setting the others to 200mA. I was worried, that some degradation already occured at 197mA, so the idea was to push it further, and speed up the degradation, if it really happened, in order to notice it faster.

Luckily, the power is holding up. For now..... With 405nm LD's it's really hard to tell, when you pushed them too hard. If these would have turned out to be the same, i would hook my 6x up to 220mA permanently, because, while it cost me a lot, it already went through a lot of use, and would give me a "look into the future", for all the others.


Now that these turned out to be different, i have no other choice, but to hook two up permanently for several days, before deciding how high to set the others.. If they weren't so expensive, i would do it with more of them. Two isn't a lot, but it's still twice as much as one... One alone wouldn't really give any definitive answers.

They will inevitably vary in efficiency. Even the expensive 6x's vary a bit. I had to push mine harder than others, to get 200mW.


But i've been wondering about something for a while now. We rarelly really know the ratings of the diodes we are abusing. I was wondering, if it would be possible to make a guesstimate of the power a diode model is made to put out, from where they start varying in efficiency a lot.

With the PHRs, the differences are big, but the PHR is a low power diode. They are somewhat consistent at low powers, but the higher you go, the larger the differences become. With higher power diodes, the differences are lower, but at a certain point, they will become noticable.

Open cans for example, seem to be very consistent even at 420mA.


For now, the 4x/6x diodes seem much more consistent than PHRs. But variances in graphs could come from different test conditions between different testers / how the test is done.

Igor, at 219mA's to your GGW 6X torture test, how long of run times are you talking about? Heatsink? I have one at 175mA's and I may want to turn it up a bit...
