We CAN collimate, because we ARE using the LENS from the TOP part of the aixiz module. i.e. the black bit.
(I hope you don't think I'm being rude - I just used the caps to clarify)

Nice one Rog! I love your diagrams
In order to mass produce them quickly, I'm going to get a milling cutter ground the the exact profile of the steps and diameters needed. Then it will mean I don't have to touch the lathe for cutting the ledges.... In the long term meaning, faster production, therefore lower cost
Kenom, I know you are in the middle of a move, but have I definitly got the go-ahead to make 60-100 of these? (or whatever quantity?) I know I still need to make some CAD designs of the whole item. But I can start pricing materials as I go along and getting the cheapest prices for materials, tools and bits and bobs, if I know it's going ahead....

actually I indicated to the manufacturing company that I wanted to top section threaded for the lens and he has not indicated to me taht the thread size was going to be an issue. He quoted me a total cost and that included all the threading and whatnot. I know we're trying to cut corners here to make things easier but it was my goal in this thing initially to get rid of the Aixiz module entirely. Brass in my opinion is not as effective at heatsinking as aluminum especially when it is chromed. I still have not sat down with the company since my initial consultation as he wants a fee for any further consultations and schematics. I will inquire if the threads on the inside diameter of the optics chamber are going to be an issue to clarify from him. Since there has been so much interest from the forums so far in seeing this become a reality I will save up some money and pay him his consultation fees if Daniel can't do the lens thread in the head.

Im not completely sure yet, though I have the money.

will it be like 3 holes on the inside where you just pop in the diode and bam u got it, or will I have to pop in a driver? Or do I have to solder and wire not pop in...
also, where do I get CR123's? Would you do a thing where you charge a little bit extra to pre-install the driver?

Kenom, I know what you mean, but I was only talking about cutting the top part of the aixiz module to 'harvest' the thread, and press the thread in, (with the lens), leaving the LD space to be pressed directly into the big aluminium casing as before, so you are using it like a jacket. So the brass plated bit won't actually be touching the LD, so there will not be any heat conducted through it.
I can't even name the thread - I can't find a match on my thread gauge, and I don't think it's a fine pitch, it looks too small from that. I recon it's a specialist scientific thread....
However, if someone knows exactly what type of thread it is, Rog maybe??..., then that may help Kenom get a more accurate quote from the manufacturers.

@ kenom..... I think my main concern with the proposed one piece, all aluminium heatsink/LD/lens mount is the lack of access for soldering....We all know just how careful you need to be, getting the capacitor/diode, solder and iron in that reccess and seeing what you are doing.
I have had a rethink to bring it more in line with what you invisaged....
I am assuming that the front section will be screwed on to the barrel, in which case do away with the rear reccess on the heatsink and replace it with a spacer.
*Edit....Just a slight rethink, the spacer should be a piece of plastic tube so that the drive circuit is in an insulated housing.

I'm not looking at having too much room on the back section of the diode as far as a recess is concerned. That would make it very difficult to get access to teh diode for soldering. I wasn't actually looking at soldering the board directly to the LD. I was more going for wires running up to the head and then having the driver circuit below in the battery chamber. However spinning the head onto the barrel is going to stress the pins so soldering just a dummy board with connections for the LD pins and then mm's below connections for our wires would be the best. It wouldn't take much to solder teh board onto the LD positive on one side and negative on the other. With the access that I've got and the space that is available it should be enough for folks to solder the pins to the board.
I know I'm being stubborn and probably a little rude and I apologize. I have a vision and I'm trying to see it to fruition. I'll find out with the first initial runs how plausable this is. Now initially I hadn't intended to do anything about a GB with this until I had all the kinks ironed out but I was soo excited that I just had to go with it. You've all had some great idea's and I may end up having to go with the Aixiz module top cut off and inserted in. As a matter of fact I had nightmares about this not working and having to use the Aixiz module all last night. I'd like to keep this as all one peice for the time being and will see how it goes. I have talked with the manufacturing company and they have indicated they CAN cut the threads for the lens. So as long as they can make this work the way I've invisioned it I'd like to keep it that way. Again I apologize for being stubborn on this. I don't mean to offend anyone really! My cost on the laser barrels is not $30 a barrel. There is a little mark up so I can buy the clicky for the tail cap and the rubber boot. The circuit and the lenses. And of course so I can keep a little for my time and effort. I assure you I'm not getting rich off this! I will probably keep less than $3 per barrel when it's all said and done.

ya know he didn't say. he just looked at it and said as long as he's got the lens to mate it up with he can turn the threads. I don't think he wants to put too much effort into it until he gets his consultation fees. I'm online now on gtalk if ya wanna chat.

What I'll do is, I'll finish my designs and make one for myself as a one off, as I know now how much you really want to see this through.
I'll keep checking back to see how this goes.
If the manufacturers let you down or can't do the threading, get in touch, as I'd love to help manufacture them.

God, Now it makes me sound like I'm a total dictator and wanting to do this totally myself. I'm so terribly sorry daniel. You can rest assured you will be the first I will contact if the manufacturer lies or lets me down. I hope I havn't soured anyone to what a wonderful product this is by my stubborness. Stick by me folks it'll be worth it I promise!!
We've kinda stalled and are waiting for roughly 15 more to go forward on this. One way or another guys you will get an aweseome product.!!!
