I don't mean to jump in here, or "gang up" on someone...but I have to emphatically agree with Hak here. I am relatively new to this forum as well, but one thing i found-out early was that JEtlasers, in particular, Gray, are rare examples of a company and sales manager who very sincerely care that their customers are satisfied. I would wager that at the time you wrote your opinion (which is one of the freedoms allowed in open forums), you had not actually interacted with Gray personally. The man has an almost scary tendency to err on the side of caution, and could not be more accommodating and willing to help. He spent real time with me, a newbie with lots of dumb questions, and never made me feel like a burden. I bought 2 lasers from him, and when i couldn't figure something out with the second one, he provided me with a 2 page personal email that solved the problem and more...If you were to read all the threads, even just in the last year, you would find that Gray and jetlasers receive more praise and gratitude from forum members than almost any body else. I'm sure it was a simple oversight, one that i know probably troubled gray very much, and to make an off-hand comment that jabs at his integrity was reckless...even i felt a pang of offense just to think someone would suggest he is anything but willing to provide only the best he can! In a competitive marketplace, small companies simply can't afford slander where it is not due...surely you aren't suggesting that JL would do something like this (no IR filters) intentionally to make their lasers look more powerful! That is downright offensive!
I respect your right to say whatever you need to here, but know that people stand by those who do right by them here...and Gray has done nothing less than right by me and hundreds more.
I subscribe to this thread, so that's the only reason i happened upon this little skiff...I'll stay out of it now...
I hope you have talked privately to Gray by now..i'm sure your opinion has changed if you have!
in your defense, your heart was in the right place warning other owners about IR leaks..that's a serious issue with dangerous possiblities...You are obviously a thorough consumer. I appreciate you lookin out I just think you worded your concerns in an overtly slanderous way...
huh. that's sort of a passive-aggressive way to apologize--adding the definition of "slander" as though i was unaware of it's meaning and all... buddy, by definition, you saying that it was "shit" of them(JL) to deceive buyers into thinking they had gotten a "sweet deal" when in fact, as you blatantly implied, they were being sold IR radiation masked as overspec visible light..IS SLANDEROUS. it is untrue, and injurious to their reputation...big time! I'm just going off of the definition you so wittily threw at me.... I think i'll just take your attempt at an apology at face value, offer you best wishes, and wash my hands of this nonsense. I do have a good friend who means well, but always seems to rub people the wrong way--even when he's trying to be nice---and i'll just assume that this is a problem you two share. No hard feelings, and thank's for the English brush-up..I"m glad i still use some words properly.
Also IIRC a different IR pump is used for 473. NOT the same as the one used for 532nm. For all I know this may mean a different IR filter would be required- it does not make much sense but I am NO expert.
The pump is a 808nm. It is just a lot more powerful, because typical efficiencies for this wavelength are around 1.5%, 2%. It pumps an ND:YAG, that lases at 946nm. That then, is frequency doubled to 473nm, commonly using a BBO crystal. Some leaks very little and there is little diffusion.
Anyways the IR filter should be HR to 808nm AND 946nm. I don't know if common IR filters (HR 808nm and 1064nm) would block 946nm, but I think so. Maybe not 99%, because its not the filter center wavelength.
If one could test it... it would be great. The pump for a 100mW laser (at high efficiencies, properly made resonating cavity, temperature stable), could be higher than 3W so beware.
