FS: Sonar Laser Cases!

What's wrong with the CR123a's anyway? That's what I've been planning to use from the start, and that's what the barrel is designed for.
 





You are right daguin maybe busting out a dremel is the way to go. To protect the threads electrical insulation tape does a pretty good job though. Guess i'll just have to wait and see when I have the sonar in my hands, I mean it would be pretty easy to manufacture a dummy batt, or perhaps some high density foam with a contact hot glued to the end, but I was really looking forward to the "1800" mah the 17670 provides.

The main rob with the cr123 is that with a boost driver a diode is required and when using a linear driver 2 cr123s don't cut the mustard at higher powers from what I gather. Maybe the new drlava 1v dropout driver would be ideal for this project.

If you stay below 150mA and use a linear driver, you will be fine.  Above 150mA you need more voltage to operate the diode efficiently.  If you use two 123's with the flexdrive, you will need to limit the voltage with a 1n40001 (IIRC) diode inline from the battery to the driver.  This host and heat sink combination doesn't make that as easy as using it for the battery contact off of the driver.  You could include it inline "inside" the cut out of the heat sink for the driver.  It looks like there will be enough room there.

Mine won´t even fit rcr123a?? I´am a bit confused. I thought thats what they were made for in the first place?

Wait so you cant fit 123's into yours?! Wicked :-?

The rcr is the same as the icr.  They will "fit", but you only have .02mm clearance.  With the protection circuitry they will probably get stuck.  These tubes were designed for the "CR" 123 (the primary, non-rechargeable ones).  They fit fine.  They also only give you 6V total.

I tried to put them in with the protection circuit at the bottom. While the went through the thread nicely, they got stuck shortly after.
I guess i have to purchase some unprotected or primarys from dx then...

Me too, but they didn´t fit. Going to try again later. However, i bought some trustfire rcr123a from dx, they should arrive at the end of next week or a few days earlier.
I hope that anyone comes up with some great idea about batterys soon^^

Is the problem whether they fit length ways or width ways?

Dark_Horse, what batteries did you use to fit the heatsink?

Yep. 16340's WILL fit. I just don't want ANOTHER battery that will only be used in this one laser.

Let's have a look in the drawer .. . .AAA, 10440, CR2, CR123, ICR123, 17670, 18650 . . . .Yep, that's enough ;)

Plus, with the Rkcstr, you would still be limited to less than 150mA of current.

Well, these Sonars don't really have the heatsinking to go pushing to insane outputs. For those things you'd probably be better with an MXDL, and all the space those provide.

150mA is about what I want to push mine too anyway, I'm considering either 120mA or 140mA.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Since this is only a "one of", curiosity host for me, I may limit it to 150mA as well. That way it will burn forever (even if I can't see the beam very well).

I think I want about 100 or 125 mW outpout, but I am quite content with the ~ 68 mW the 79 mA should provide if I don´t mess things up. But if 100 or 125 mW get to warm, I´am going to give it 125 mA, because i like that number xD
