What I really would enjoy seeing, is your comments after the build! Especially with the Pocket Mini build kits that you ordered! I would like to see comments from an experienced builder such as yourself! ;)

Jayrob, I'm disappointed in you. I was expecting this to be MUUUUUUCH HARDER TO DO!

I have almost never soldered before, but soldering the wire on the switch was so easy! The build is very solid and weighty. I had an issue with cutting the spring, it was quite strong. I had to get my wire cutters and SHARPEN THEM. Only then could I cut it. However, this is not your fault, just the manufacturers for making hard to break products, shame isn't it. This is such a fun and easy build, it's really simple to do the soldering, cutting, turning the screws, and then putting it together. I might get the pocket mini next for more of a challenge ;). Thanks for a wonderful build.

EDIT: Stand by for pictures, I'm just now getting my Nikon warmed up.

EDIT! I had another question actually, there seemed to be a brass ring (really tiny, about the size of the module) that came with the build. I didn't use it. What was this piece?

Just a heads up ;)
You'll need pretty good soldering skills to do the pocket mini...

BUT... Jayrob makes everything else easy for you, so buy from him :D

Heh, I'm (sadly) aware. One of the reasons I chose a greenie is because I didn't need to solder the driver ;).

Hey thanks for posting your Th0ughts on the build! :)

The extra brass ring came with the host. It is in case you were doing a flashlight mod that had a smaller driver board. A good item to save in case you ever need it.

Nice pictures!

About the Pocket Mini Kit, it is easy too. You just have to understand how to set current on a FlexDrive using a test load. But this would be the same for any build using the FlexDrive...

FYI: These beams aren't enhanced by smoke fog etc. Just the night sky. Also there is no time exposure, this is one shot standing up half naked in the cold (or as cold as it gets for us Floridians).

Once again, Jay, these are incredible builds. It feels very nice, is rather small compared to commercial portable lasers, and packs a punch! Soon as my macro lens comes in I will take individual pics of the heatsinks for reference.

Yes, you can get a cheap pointer for much less, but there is really no comparison for good heatsinking to the module...

Plus, once you have the kit, it will be a good host for green modules of this size for a lifetime! :) So in these areas, it is a much better choice for a good home to put your green module into. ;)

I don't know if it has been asked, but do you need a soldering iron for this green laser project ? This is something I can't find anywhere on my grounds.

AusLasers, I can include an Allen wrench if necessary. I normally don't, because many people already have one. They are readily available at your local hardware store for less than $2 dollars.







Helioplasma, with this host/heatsink set up, you will need to solder a small wire across the switch on your module. It is a very easy procedure that can be done in less that 2 minutes. (see picture in the first post)

If you were to buy one of my modules with the kit. (50mW or 100mW) Then I could solder the wire for you.

I have a few 50mW modules and just a couple of 100mW modules. These are brand new and only tested. I would sell them as such, but not guarantee this kind of item. Because the are something that can be easily damaged if over driven, or used without a heatsink. Even with at heatsink, they should be kept to a 1 min. on / 1 min. off duty cycle.

Jay, which do you recommend? the protective cap? or the protective glass? I've seen the plastic thing on the MXDL and it scratches easily. Is this stuff actually glass? will it scratch easily?
And have you done any tests (maybe with an empty host) if this thing could actually be waterproof? :)

It has o-rings at every joint, so it is definitely water resistant, but I have not tried to put it under water or anything like that...

As far as what I recommend, it would depend mostly on user preference. Personally, I like the custom front piece. Because of the clear aperture.

Although the glass (yes it is glass) lens looks nice, the custom aluminum piece offers better performance. The glass will cause a very small amount of reflection that may show up as very faint side spots that you would notice in a very dark room. Also, the extra element will reduce the power by a little. Maybe 5mW's or so...
