Yes, for a positive regulated supply. It is bass ackwards if it is a DPSS module, though.

Bumping this thread with a question:

Would anyone be interested in full copper hosts? (maybe part brass)

I've got a couple orders right now to catch up on and not accepting new orders ATM, but I'm thinking once I'm all caught up I might look into making full copper hosts. I've found a new metals dealer so that's why I'm asking, their prices are expensive as hell so best to buy in bulk. I'd keep the hosts as cheap as possible though, I know the modules we all get are already pricey and the last thing you'd need is a bigger bill. Keep in mind this is completely just to gauge interest and if I were to plan to get some full copper (or part brass) hosts out it wouldn't be for quite a long time, as it takes a while to design, test, order, etc etc

Maybe some brass somewhere in the mix too, brass handle and copper sink perhaps? Can I get some help with battery size interest too? Not sure if I'd be able to do anything with anything bigger than 18650 right now, but maybe I'll look into it. If anyone thinks this sounds interesting don't hesitate to reply... :yh:

Sinner made some all copper hosts that were/are very nice. I have one of them with a Mits ML501P73 diode in it. It takes a single 18650 or two 16340s. It might take two 18350s, but I haven't tried that yet. I know pure copper is very expensive, so I would have to save for a large copper host at this point, but they are awesome if you have one. Let me know an approximate price for what you are planning and I'll let you know if it would be something I could justify the price of. :thanks:

I've been playing around with brass and copper and truthfully I think you should give it a shot! They cut a little differently compared to aluminum but I think they make for beautiful hosts. And I have one of ehgemus old hosts and I'm pretty sure I know how he made the copper/aluminum combos, but I can't be 100% sure yet:p

Thanks for the interest Paul, I'll have to take a look at Sinner's hosts. Pure copper is expensive but the machinable alloy is even more. I don't know about the estimate, it's hard to tell until I work everything out, but I'd say roughly between $100-$150. I can't really pin down anything more specific than that. Also depends on demand, if enough people want them I could lower the price.

It seems like that's getting to be a floating concept now, I was e-mailing Ricker about a week ago and we were discussing a corrective optics mount. I could make them very cheaply from 3D printing but I'd have to give some thought about a machined design.

Yes, that's true. So far the only full copper laser hosts I've made were 3 (Was it more Bob? I can't remember) of them for BobMc, they turned out decently. Made the same hosts for him in brass too, they were pretty neat. Machinability depends on the alloy, and some of the better alloys aren't sold locally anywhere and have to be imported, which is part of the cost (but not that much in all honesty).

Speaking of alloys (and importing them) I might be getting my hands on some exotics :shhh:
 
As long as they have good thermal conductivity, you've got my interest. That, or used as ornamental parts, and the standbys used for heat sinks.

Yes, you made both styles for me the brass and the copper. I've built the brass ones. Still have the copper set that needs to be built, just haven't decided which diodes I want to use. It's on my "to do list" among a hundred other things ( or so it seems )

Keeps me busy and out of trouble. :)

Let me know about the corrective mounts if you decide to go ahead with them. :thanks:

I got my hands on something kind special too:D I'm not going to attempt it till I get some more experience though. Here in a couple months I'll have more time to practice and then you might see a couple cool things from me. I'm interested in these exotic hosts you might be making soon:D:D:D
 
I like copper better than brass for heat sinking, but I would be fine with brass battery holder and focus knob. I'm interested in what you have in mind with exotic alloys.
 
Copper wicks the heat away faster than aluminium, but alum. transfers to air better.

The
Hosts I been making have
Copper.aluminum or aluminum with a copper sleeve pressed in. If you machine them with enough mass they all work grea. If you make a host with a small heat sink why bother. The gives you lower limitations to what you can put in it
