Actually, i'm more worried about these diodes gradually disappearing. They are diodes from HD-DVD sleds, and the HD-DVD format failed..

If these sleds stop being manufactured, we are left with Blue Ray writers again. And those still cost more than an entire laser with the HD-DVD freak diode.


Even with the format disappearing, the laser hobby alone should keep the PHR-803T sled production alive for a while.
But the initial low price was because the manufacturers and sellers thought no one really wanted them. Now that people are making group buys and large volume purchases all over the place, we could actually see the price go up.

Well the power listed in your sig is definitely achievable. It could even be achieved and surpassed with a plastic lens.

But since your laser is 100mW already, the current most likely won't have to be changed to achieve 120mW after 405nm optics.

Unfortunately, it rarely works this way. The market is moving on. The next generation of blu-rays is in the pipe. These will only get more scarce (with an accompanying increase in cost). We don't even know if these are still being manufactured or if we are already working on depleting the available stockpile. It is possible that what we experienced with the Toshiba drives is but a glimpse into the future for the 803t sled.

The reason that these units are so affordable now is that our very limited market is flooded. 100mW blu-rays are too available. The supply won't increase. It will decrease. How many of these posts contain the message, "I killed my diode?" How quickly did everybody get "crazy" when the supply of Toshiba drives collapsed?

Yeah, HD-DVD is dying, and 803t sleds with it. Sad. :(

The 6x blu-rays cost pretty much at the moment, but the blu-ray format won the showdown against HD-DVD. And pretty soon, more and more people will replace their DVDs with BRs. And when BRs will become more common and the demand for them will increase, the price will also go down.

We are ATM stuck with expensive 6x diodes, but they will most likely come down in price in a near future. Although it's still a pity that the 803t diodes will diminish, because it have proven to be REALLY nice.


BTW Igor, when did you intend to upload the pics?

I totally agree about the 6X's. 8X/10X is on the way. How long do you think it will be before the $275 6X blu-rays come down to less than $40 each? :P

We will have to give it some time, but it will be well worth the wait!

Is 10x blu-ray on the way? :o Dang, imagine the power of one of those! :) But it will prolly take some time for these to be sold for $100. Imagine this on buy, sell and trade in 2 years:

"FS: 10x MXDL blu-ray, 300mw, asking $150"

Let me explain what i mean by "safe"..

The PHR diode is turning out to be as powerful as a 16x red.. What we don't know yet is if it is as sturdy..

I still remember people telling me i was crazy for running my 16x at 270mA.. They recommended 150mA, definitely not more than 200mA..
But that diode is still doing great at 270, and still putting out 186mW after a year of use - that is the diode i am giving to you in your red i made.


With the blu rays, we don't really know much about them yet.. So i have to be careful, especially if i make several of them for others.. I want to be sure they will live, and not just during the warranty. But if they turn out to be as sturdy as reds, even 170mA could be considered safe. Maybe more!

That is why i included several preset higher current options on the driver. That, as well as space to select any random current you may wish. I do not want to put a pot in tho - people like to play with pots too much, and you have to measure the current while changing it.. If it was a linear driver, you could measure the diode current at the tailcap, but since it's a boost driver, you would have to measure between the driver and the diode, which is risky.. Much better to close a jumper or put a resistor in - then you know what the current is for sure.


If you look at various diode datasheets, there are certain ratings, within which reliable operation is guaranteed. And within those ratings, a diode can live for like 10.000 hours. We are pushing these diodes CW at close to their pulsed ratings. So the life will be shorter than that of course.

But with the reds, as long as you don't go above a certain current, they just keep on going. There is always a diode that just dies, but most of them can take it.


So let's hope for the best.. When this started, i thought we would have good >50mW lasers. Now they are turning out to be at least three times as powerful! And we don't even know what will happen once we put in proper optics.. :o

Nichia announces blue laser plans

Mass production of 250 mW blue-violet sources will begin in January 2008, with 320 mW on the way.

Nichia announced its plans to produce blue-violet laser sources for next-generation DVD drives at Laser Expo 2007, held in Yokohama, Japan, at the end of April. A 180 mW pulsed-mode model will start shipping in June 2007, to be followed by a 250 mW model in January 2008.

The sources will enable data to be recorded onto DVD disks at much faster speeds. Nichia states that 4x-6x recording speed is possible onto a dual-layer disk using a 200 mW blue-violet source, while 8x speed is possible with 240 mW sources.

Nichia also plans to mass produce a 320 mW model in the first half of 2008, which the company claims will allow 10x recording speed. The estimated lifetime of the device is more than 10,000 hours.

Everthing above sounds really great! :D
Who really NEEDS a laser with 10 000 hours of life in it? I mean, I am playing with my lasers perhaps 1-2 hours a day. So if the life will be 10 000 hrs, it will give me roughly 15-30 years before the diode will die. And by that time, laser diodes will be like stone age technology! ;D

Have you finished the lazors yet Igor, or will you have to work with them tomorrow as well?

I forgot to add in the previous post:

Don't wait up for the pictures.. I will work very late tonight. Probably until 4 in the morning.
I will also work tomorrow most of the day, but i should be able to ship most as well.

I'm just happy, that i don't have to do two things at the same time anymore, and that i can work on the lasers exclusively. Until a few days ago, i was so busy, that i hardly had time to sleep, never mind browse the forum.

Building so many lasers is hard work as well, but it's much more fun, than the other work i had.

I would really hate to send them all out without at least making a nice group picture first.. ;)

Yup, I delted almost all mails, except all the laser-related mails from you. It could be good to have them for records.

I am looking forward to see the pic of all those lazors, and looking even more forward to get my hands on mine! :)
