It wasn't actually useless, if we're thinking about the same lens. Some spherical aberration, which was to be expected, but otherwise pretty neat. You can compensate for it by having it focus the light a bit, then throw in a concave lens to collimate and correct for spherical aberration. You get a thinner beam and no aberration.
Or use it in a scope, where the short FL really makes it shine, although Anchor actually has 3mmØ x 4mmFL coated doublets for $25 which work better in a scope. Which raises the question of what you'd want to charge for the singlets? I can probably use a couple of lenses for some experiments, but that depends on what you'll be charging for them.
suiraM,
You do know, that you are my favorite mad scientist of all, right?
Yes, I AM talking about the same lenses - my very first attempt at a custom lens, the v1, completelly custom machined to "my" (well a friend's and mine) specs.... I gave you one (?) once with your lazor a long time ago...
What i will charge for them?
That statement was more one of desperation than actuall offer. I lost a thousand dollars on that one single first attempt!
It was an expensive lesson that only thaught me one thing until a short time ago. Now it's two lessons, so i guess it's $500 each..
The question of how much i would sell them for is really a little, hmm.. Obsolete?
Whatever i sell them for is better than nothing. Nothing means $1k down the drain!
Ideally i'd sell them at manufacturing cost, but who, other than mad scientists would even want them?
I was thinking (well actually others suggested it) of including a "donation box" on the GB payment page, to compensate a little for the research losses, and maybe offer the beautiful v1 lenses too, at a very low price, for anyone who might want them, for whatever reason they can come up with, or simply just for their "historical value"...
If
you want some, however, just contact me directly.. You know my email address, it's been reactivated now (and mostly cleaned up... but if there is an email i missed, just poke it a little to make it come out at the top.)..
