This is an amazing piece of work, well done!

One thing I'd add is a "tailbiter" aka "shut down very quickly" circuit.
This is to stop your expensive diode frying if it 1) overheats, 2) something goes awry with the driver such as low battery causing open loop operation, 3) mechanical failure.

This would also be handy for modulating the diode as well.

Circuit needn't be complex, just a single transistor with optical bridge aka optoisolator.
I'd use a MOSFET and power resistor in series as this would drop diode current below destruction levels and allow so-called "preheat" or "sub lasing" operation to allow its use for pulsed holography applications.

Why not just pull the enable (DIM) pin on the IC?
 





Well, I have tested it up to 1.8A output (the prototype boards weren't effective enough to handle higher currents) but the IC has a high enough switching current to sustain upwards of 3A output. For this first iteration of the board it is between 75-80% efficient, but further generations (in development now) will have between 85-95% efficiency. It can handle up to 16Vin and 10Vout, but obviously it can go lower. For now they are fixed output current, but a pot is going to be added in later versions.

Pricing is up to Clif to decide, but the parts aren't cheap, so expect a bit more than $20 from Clif.

that's still better than $50 worth of flex drives to get 1.8A.
 
This would be useful for any application where constant current is required.
e.g. electroplating, LED drivers, large format displays, etc.

Is there a lower current limit?

And a FlexDrive can't go above 5.5V ;) This thing can drive with up to 16Vin.

I am getting confused here. Are we still talking about this boost driver in this boost driver thread? A boost only driver's voltage source should not exceed the forward voltage of the diode.

If we are not talking about this boost driver it may be better to take it to a different thread. You don't want some noob to come here ant see that thinking this boost driver can take 16V. If I can be confused I am sure a noob could.:eek:

Ya - at this stage it's unclear who is talking about the boost, and who is talking about that prototype buck driver Wolf is testing.

It would be good to keep discussion here focused on the boost.

TSteele: Anything that works for the 5.6mm blues will work for the 9mm blues. They're the same specs (as far as we can tell so far). Probably the same emitter.

Ok, I was wondering because the discussion by "some people" on the 9mm thread about it being a negative thing that it is hitting 4.8v.

What do our 5.6mm diodes hit?

I've always used 4.75V as my figure. But admittedly I've never paid much attention to whether it's really 4.7V, or 4.6V, or 4.8V, etc.
 
This may be a stupid question, but for the round driver you posted. Does the bottom of the driver have a solder pad for the + connection?
 
Yes. depending on the diode. Who has round ones for sale? I'd love to see a complete one all I have is boards and I must say there is little room for errrors. Wont work in the powerlight B50 pill without drilling it out to 16mm er 5/8". But it will work in the aurora's pil.
 
I don't think anybody has them for sale. I was looking into ordering boards and learning how to reflow. Anybody have any good suggestions about converting a toaster oven into a reflow oven?
