Flat Red Laser Diode Testing - 2nd Phase

The mounting for these flat diodes is more difficult,
but the results will be worth it with the latest Red diodes.

The easiest mount is to leave the diode in the aluminum housing and adapt it to the Aixiz housing for lens mounting.

I have found some manufacturers charts showing long term operation @ 600 ma for 500 hours.

Power Input = 3 Volts x 600ma = 1.8 Watts

At a reasonable efficiency of 25%, that would = 450mw of output power.

That is the ultimate goal.

600 mA ??? WOW:drool: I.m about to machine the pocket with a small endmill. On the second thought, a round hole would also work.

This is incredible stuff happening with tests at the moment, we have blu ray's and red's pushing half a watt each, that is serious power from little packages.

Much respect to the pioneers!
 
I milled out an Aixiz holder portion but the force of the vice needed slightly deformed the threaded end for the lens. I drilled out a second one followed by a Dremmel tool slot. I'm now working on this. I need to get the LD assembly deep enough for focus.
If I have to mill another, I will make a holding fixture for the vice first.

:cryyy: I straightened the slotted housing so a lens would easily screw in and deepened the slot to make this work with a Jayrob lens. I almost got it alligned running 100 mA and apparantly the little LD overheated and became a nice LED. Without heatsinking epoxy to the housing, I let the smoke out. The slotted housing will work if cut out deep enough.

Found a few more flat diode data sheets from another manufacturer:

One interesting dual IR/Red was rated @ 340mw peak for the IR laser.

I almost trashed the diode harvesting it but it is now mounted in my machined Aixiz module.

Using a Jayrob 650 G-1 lens assembly, I'm reading:

200 mA 182 mW 2.6 V
250 mA 218 mW 2.8 V

This is a 3 wire flat. By the way, The Jayrob 650 lens assembly boosted this by 23% over an Aixiz plastic lens.

Enough for tonight. OLD DATA SEE BELOW for bad news.

This is impressive!

I can't believe I threw away these diodes...

Has it been determined exactly which sleds the best ones are found in?
 
crap I just threw away three of the flat style diodes :( 2 20X and 1 16X

Not good news here----------------

Slow power test easing up the power:

100 mA -- 53 mW
150 mA -- 102
200 mA -- 144
250 mA -- 180
300 mA -- 207
350 mA -- 1 damn mW -- It toasted - still lases but almost nothing.

The curve was almost straight line but I was taking 50 mA steps.

Sony Optiarc 22x Flat diode. I killed another :-(

I got a 18x one and got it to 2.6V at 180mA...burns nice. Stupid thing is that I broke the + pin :banghead: so I can only touch the + with the wire. I managed to keep it at a certain distance from the lens, and smoke came out of the duct tape :D . Any possible host module for this kind of diodes?
 
Okay I have a question for anyone who has any experience with these flat red diodes. As you can see from the pictures, I press the flat diode in a brass bushing and dremeled the aixiz module for the bushing to fit flush. and set it with some thermal glue, it focuses great. But now heres the problem when I power up the diode its really bright for like a half a second then it dims, but its not blown because when I disconnect the power supply and re-connect it does the same thing bright then dim! whats wrong? At first I tested the diode with a 3.0 volt cr2, after that didn't work I hooked it up to a rkcstr driver set @ 300mA . same thing any idea's why this is happening???

Is anyone still working with these?

I'm cleaning house and looking for a new home for some of the ones from the LG 8X (and one from the 10X).

You have to be able to fabricate a mount for these to be considered. No "I jes wanna get one" peoplez allowed ;)
