Filling Out My Rainbow with a Purchase

I think you're right. Still, considering my other options, too (considering I have about two weeks to decide or so).

My first yellow PGL III was a Vega from LG, the "Garage Sale", but my current one was from CNI, (also lacks the LG engraving on the unit)... I really like this one much better all the way around. IF I sell it, I would buy the 50 mW 589nm one! :) -Glenn

So here's the info I got from Ava concerning prices:

PGL-III-473nm-50mW/Unit USD495.00
PGL-III-589nm-5mW/Unit USD450.00
PGL-III-593.5nm-3mW/Unit USD450.00
589-50mW portable laser is USD900.00

Does it seem weird to anyone that on DragonLasers there is a 589nm for $600, whereas it's $450 for 5mW, and $900 for 50mW from CNI? I thought DL was one of their distributors? And does Ava give different prices for different people?

i think that DL sells an overspeced CNI 5mW as "50mW"
the overspeced units then labeled at their output.

so that, DL have a lot of profit.

CNI lasers can be 10x overspec? o.O That's a lot more power. How do they "accidentally" label it that low?

AFAIK, a manufacturer company like CNI sells a laser by its minimum power output. so if you buy a 5mW from CNI, you may have an equal of 50mW laser, because its overspeced.

on the other hand, if you buy from trade/reseller company, you may have some underspec laser. because IMO a trading company often buy in a bulk, then they sort it based on their measurement.

for example, a 5mW 589 that they found overspeced to >50mW then labeled as 50mW. this output power also highly linked with their test environment, kinds of LPM which they use, and so on.

So for some reason I am thinking that I should buy from resellers... that way, it's nearly guaranteed output. I don't want to buy a $600 5mW laser from CNI, expecting overspec, and only getting 7mW, ya know?

I know. That's second after I get either a 589 or a 593.5 :P 635's are becoming more and more common, especially in picoprojectors. I figure I will nab one once they become cheap through those.

I prefer handhelds. That's why I am going to get my hands on a handheld 473 if I can.

Ah. I haven't started any projectors yet... first need to get all the wavelengths!

Back on topic... what do you all think about getting a CNI overspec as opposed to a probably onspec laser from like DL or wherever? I just am worried about the consistency of overspecness from CNI. Like, if I got a 5mW, could I guarantee 30+mW?

EDIT: Or do you guys think I should try to buy from another (trustworthy) member?

Don't count on DL even being ON spec. They were massively UNDER spec for me, and I'm currently out $120 for the pleasure of returning my purchase and obtaining a *fake* refund.
